  • Arrangement for the midterm examinations
     
    The midterm examinations will be arranged as below. 
    1. Midterm 1 will be held on October 9, 2020 (Friday) and Midterm 2 will be held on November 6, 2020 (Friday). Please mark it down on your calendar. Midterm 1 will be held about three weeks from now.
    2. Midterm examinations will be conducted online using "Blackboard" as a "take-home exam" with a 24 hours limit. For midterm 1, the examination question will be available on October 9, 2020 at 10:00am and the deadline for submission (via "Blackboard") is October 10, 2020 at 10:00am. It is expected that the paper can be finished within 3 hours. As such, the 24-hour limit should allow enough flexibility. 
    3. Midterm 1 will cover materials taught from Week 1 to Week 4.

  • Please be reminded that we will have midterm 2 next Friday (November 6). The coverage of the midterm will be from Lecture 6 p.11 to Lecture 12. That is, Section 2.1 to Section 5.1 in the textbook.

  • No lecture on Nov 19 due to the graduation ceremony.
  • The final examination will start at 10:00am on December 18th, 2020. The exam will take 24 hours and hence will end at 10:00am on the next day December 19th 2020. Please mark the time and date in your calendar. It will be an open-book test and the answers should be submitted in Blackboard. Further details will be announced in due course.

  • Reminder: Final Exam on December 18, 2020
     
    Please be reminded that there will be an online final exam on December 18, 2020 starting at 10am. Please find below some hints about the final exam:
    • The final exam will cover all taught materials of the textbook or equivalently Lecture 1 to Lecture 24 of the course lectures (with emphasis on Lecture 13 to Lecture 24).
    • The exam will start at 10am, December 18th (Friday) and the question paper will be uploaded to the course website and Blackboard on time.
    • Print out the front page as well as enough copies of the provided template of answer sheets. You may do this earlier than the starting time of the exam. You may use other kinds of paper sheets with format similar to the provided one.
    • Start each answer on a fresh page and write the number of the question attempted at the top of the page.
    • The exam will take 24 hours, so it will end at 10am, December 19th (Saturday). Please submit your work (the signed front page and all complete answer sheets) in one electric file (PDF is better) online through Blackboard on or before the due time. You are kindly reminded to prepare your submission earlier than the due time and double check if the submission is successfully made. Late submission will not be accepted.

Course Description

This course is a continuation of Linear Algebra I (MATH 1030). It is a second course on linear algebra and will cover basic concepts of abstract vector spaces, linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalizability, operators on inner product spaces, orthogonality and Gram-Schmidt process, adjoint, normal and self-adjoint operators, spectral theorems, and if time permits, quadratic forms and Jordan canonical forms. More emphasis will be put on the theoretical understanding of basic concepts in linear algebra.
