CUHK Professional Enhancement Fund (PEF): Call for Applications

Dear Colleagues,

Established in April 2012, the Professional Enhancement Fund (PEF) aims to encourage academic and research staffs to participate in professional development related to knowledge transfer (KT), so as to foster an innovative culture within CUHK. Specifically, PEF provides financial support to staff members to learn about the best practices of KT through different activities. 

Applications should be submitted ≥ 2 weeks before starting the proposed KT activity. Please find below the PEF Guidelines and Application Form. Technology and Business Development Fund (TBF): Call for Applications

The Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) would like to bring to your attention regarding the Technology and Business Development Fund (TBF). TBF aims to encourage professors to explore the commercial potential of new technologies and inventions developed from their research. TBF provides capital to turn intellectual property into outputs conducive for commercialisation.

Who should apply:
- Full-time CUHK academic staff
- You have innovation and new technology from your research
- You have a sound commercialisation plan for your invention
- Your product can make an impact to the industry / society

Successful applicants may receive funding up to HK$200,000 per project per year in 2020-21. Applications will be evaluated based on three criteria:

(a) 40% - Technical soundness
(b) 40% - Commercial viability and market readiness
(c) 20% - Project sustainability in terms of the identification of specific industry partner(s) that will adopt and/or further develop the technology

Brand new funding scheme for youth entrepreneurship in the Greater Bay Area

The Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) is rolling out a new funding scheme for students and young professors to start or develop their businesses regardless of nature.

Successful teams may receive
* Start-up capital
* Training and mentorship support
* Opportunities to explore the GBA market via CUHK’s collaborative entrepreneurial bases in the Area

Eligibility
* Youth aged 18-40 who are permanent residents of Hong Kong
* Prepared to start a business and have a more detailed plan; or start-ups that have not been in operation or have been in operation for not more than 3 years
*Business registration in Hong Kong

Jointly organised by the HKSAR Government, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Design Centre, 10th BIP Asia Forum will bring IP professionals and business leaders from all over the world to discuss the latest developments in the IP world, and to explore business collaboration opportunities. A dedicated session “Global Tech Summit” will focus on the world’s disruptive technologies and innovation trends. The Forum from last year was a great success, featured over 70 prominent speakers to share their insights with more than 2,200 IP professionals and industry leaders from 25 countries and regions.

Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) 2021-22

The Innovation and Technology Commission (ITC) of the Hong Kong SAR Government has set up Technology Start-up Support Scheme for Universities (TSSSU) to encourage students, professors and alumni from six local universities, including CUHK, to start their own technology companies to commercialize R&D results. New and successful applications will receive maximum funding of HK$700,000 per year for potentially up to three years. There can be potential opportunities to join HKSTP’s 2-year Incu-App or 3-year Incu-Tech Programme.

We have much pleasure in inviting you to join the Hong Kong / CUHK Delegation to BIO International Convention 2019 (BIO 2019). The Delegation is co-organized by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) with participants from local universities and biotech companies. 

The BIO International Convention is the world’s largest biotechnology gathering. In 2018, the event has attracted over 1,800 exhibitors, 2200 CEOs and 18,289 industry leaders from 67 countries. 關於B4B挑戰賽

B4B Challenge is a contest organised by B4B Limited, a social enterprise that aims to promote the development of a healthy and sustainable ecosystem for Big Data and AI innovation in Hong Kong and to match talents and enterprises with an intensive accelerator program.

About the Organiser
Innobator is an incubation centre in Shanghai, founded by several people from Hong Kong in 2015. By providing services such as business consulting, resources connection, business process outsourcing and office space, Innobator helps entrepreneurs put new business models and innovative ideas into executable business plans and achieve early capitalisation.  So far Innobator has been working with more than 200 potential start-up projects in different industries, most of which are Mainland China-oriented projects originated in Hong Kong.

  About the Speaker:
Mr. Stephen Hou

Mr. Stephen M. HOU is a Doctor of Law candidate at the New York University School of Law, where he is a Dean’s Award Scholar and an InSITE Fellow, advising start-up companies on entrepreneurship and venture capital. He has practiced patent prosecution for an intellectual property boutique firm in Boston and for a premier general practice law firm in San Francisco. Prior to his career in law, he has been involved in three award-winning start-up companies in Boston and Tokyo, serving as co-founder, chief engineer and software engineer. Stephen graduated Phi Beta Kappa with four degrees in physics and electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was a microsystems engineer and instructor, earning the Goodwin Medal for Excellence in Teaching and the President Paul E. Gray Award for Excellence in Research.
 

Abstract:

Patent protection for inventions is a valuable component of business strategy for start-ups, established companies, and everyone in between. This talk will discuss strategies for navigating the U.S. patent application and prosecution processes to obtain a patent with the broadest possible protection that will also withstand legal challenges later. These strategies include properly determining inventorship and ownership early on, amending claims, conducting interviews with patent examiners, filing continuing applications, and requesting ex parte reexaminations. Two-Day Certificate Training Course on Combination Products Design, Validation, Safety and Risk Management

The Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) invites you to a Two-Day Certificate Training Course on Combination Products Design, Validation, Safety and Risk Management. Combination products incorporate two or more regulated components with any combinations between a drug, a device and a biological product, providing novel solutions to healthcare problems for better patient outcomes. However this unique combination of technologies faces many challenges in the design and production processes. Special considerations that differ from the existing approaches should be taken to ensure safety of combination products.

The objective of this 2-day training course is to equip participants with essential knowledge on the regulatory requirements & safety considerations that should be made during the design, validation and production processes of combination products. Also, risk management is also a key topic in this course while the methodologies for carrying out a comprehensive risk analysis specific to the development of combination products will be discussed as well. Course details are shown as below:

The Pi Centre is a university-wide initiative to stimulate creativity and entrepreneurship by providing up to one year of working space, mentoring and business services, to teams of students and faculty who start a company to commercialize technologies and implement innovative business models for profit and for the benefit of society. Through the Pi Centre, CUHK aims to increase the number and impact of sustainable and socially responsible enterprises that integrate theoretical knowledge, enthusiasm and market discipline to create value. The Pi Centre recruits incubatees in two intakes a year, for the first having been held in March 2014 and the second currently in process.

About the Speaker: Dr. Kenneth Fong has spent the last 32 years in the biotech industry after completing his academic pursuit in biomedical research. He is best known for founding the biotech company, Clontech in 1984 where he had cultivated it to be one of the largest biomedical tool companies founded by an Asian American in the US (400 people with 65 PhD scientists). Clontech was sold to Becton Dickinson in 1999 and Dr. Fong has continued his career as a Venture capitalist with Kenson Ventures that he founded. He has since cultivated more than 10 highly successful entrepreneurs, advising them and working with them on the growth of their companies.

Currently, he sits on the board of 4 biotech companies and he was intimately involved with the Merge/Aquisition and Initial public offering (IPO) of more than 10 companies that are worth north of $3 billion. These companies range from research tools, medical diagnostics and drug development. In almost all cases, Dr. Fong has been instrumental in providing strategies for sustainable growth, value creation and liquidity. Those successful entrepreneurs have moved on to assume leadership in other start-up and mid-sized companies, which in turn leads to a new generation of entrepreneurs.

Dr. Fong has held a number of leadership positions over the years. He served as the President of the Society of Chinese Bioscientists in North America (2006-07) and President of the Bay Area Asian American Manufacturers’ Association (AAMA, 1987). He was also the member of the Board of Trustees of the California State University System (2006-13). His philanthropic interests include scholarships to San Francisco State University, the Kenneth Fong-Hearst endowed scholarships to the CSU system and 40 student scholarships to Peking university. In 2006, he was involved with establishing the Fong Optometry and Medical library at UC Berkeley, and more recently an endowed professorship at Stanford university and a technology translation endowed fund at San Francisco State University. 

Dr. Fong obtained his PhD from Indiana university and his BS from San Francisco State University.

How Innovative Enterprises get the Attention of Investors - How to Evaluate An Investment Opportunity from an Intellectual Property Perspective

“Individual investor, private equity, banker and Venture Capital Company generally take a similar approach in picking the best innovation from many innovative enterprises.  As an innovator, what would make you stand out and get the attention of investors?   What are the factors that would affect the value of a company that is based on an innovation?  What are the relevant questions when due diligence investigation is performed on intellectual property of an investment opportunity?  Generally, investors are more likely to invest in a company that is unique, and if the company is based on technology, whether the proprietary technology is protected by intellectual property and the strength of the protection.  Investors are less likely to invest in a company that has a high risk of infringement on competitor’s intellectual property.  Ownership and rights to the intellectual property, assignments and any encumbrances on the title and license obligations are also important in a due diligence investigation.”

ASTRI Day 2016 cum Memorandum Signing of CUHK-ASTRI Joint Lab Establishment 《2016應科院日 暨 中大-應科院聯合實驗室備忘錄簽訂儀式》

The Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) of the Chinese University of Hong Kong sincerely thanks for your attendance of the captioned event. Please find below a brief review thereof.

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • (1) A signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between CUHK and the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has successfully been held;
  • (2)  Opening remarks were given by Prof. Fanny Cheung (Pro-Vice-Chancellor, CUHK) and Dr. Franklin Tong (Chief Executive Officer, ASTRI).
  • (3) Overview sessions showcasing the R&D competences of ASTRI in the areas of FinTech5G Wireless Technologies and Intelligent Manufacturing have successfully been given by respective representative sof ASTRI: Dr. Duncan WongDr. Justin Chuang and Dr. Shi Xunqing Daniel;
  • (4) On-demand Breakout Matching Sessions for Professors and Research Students to explore research / technology commercialisation opportunities with ASTRI were held successfully at different locations near the event.
The MOU signing is to indicate the intention of the two institutes to establish a joint lab, to further strengthen CUHK’s collaboration with industry, and as an indication of CUHK’s vision to support innovation in Hong Kong. More information of the event is provided below:

The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Hong Kong Government in 2000 with the mission of enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness in technology-based industries through applied research. Ahead of Germany, France and Japan – Why Hong Kong is a top place for flourishing biotech innovations (3 Nov 2015, Tue)

The Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS) invites you to a seminar about the innovation of the Biotech industry in Hong Kong. Prof. KWAN Hoi Shan from School of Life Sciences will share his view on why Hong Kong, already ranked ahead of Germany, France, Japan and South Korea, is among the top places for flourishing biotech innovations. This view is based on the 2015 Scientific American Worldview Report, which analyzes and interprets data on the innovation potential in biotechnology for 54 countries. Based on seven scorecard categories created from 27 components, this analysis combines information from biotechnology inputs and outputs through government protection and policies and far beyond. This seminar will discuss how biotech scientists can take advantage of Hong Kong’s superiority.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Sunny SIU is Chief Strategy Officer and President of Asia Pacific at ProphetStor, a company with leading software defined storage solutions. Dr. Siu was previously a co-founder and President of Asia Pacific at RMI Corporation, a leader in multi-core processor technologies, which was acquired by NetLogic Microsystems (Nasdaq: NETL) in 2009, and became NETL’s President and General Manager of Asia Pacific from 2009 to 2012. He joined Broadcom as Managing Director for Greater China of the Processors and Wireless Infrastructure BU through Broadcom’s US$3.7B acquisition of NETL in 2012.

Dr. Siu holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in electrical engineering from Stanford University, a B.E. (summa cum laude) in electrical engineering from Cooper Union, and a B.S. (summa cum laude) in mathematics and computer science from New York University. Dr. Siu was formerly an endowed-chair associate professor at MIT, and the founding research director of MIT Auto-ID Center that pioneered research on Internet-of-Things (IoT). Prior to MIT, Dr. Siu was a distinguished assistant professor at UC Irvine. He was a recipient of the US National Science Foundation Young Investigator Awards and best paper awards from IEEE and SPIE for his research on networking and distributed systems.

蕭啟陽博士為先智雲端數據(ProphetStorc)的現任首席策略師/總裁(亞太區)。該公司為全球領先的軟件定義存儲解決方案公司。蕭博士亦為美國RMI微電子公司(RMI Corporation) 的前聯合創辦人/前總裁(亞太區)。RMI於多核心處理器技術領域擁有全球領導的地位。RMI亦於2009年被NetLogic微系統公司(NetLogic Microsystems; 納斯達克股票代碼: NETL)收購。蕭博士亦於此後至2012年間上任NETL的亞太區總裁/總經理。NETL於2012年被博通公司(Broadcom)以37億美元收購後,蕭博士亦成為博通公司的大中華地區董事總經理,主理該公司的處理器及無線技術基礎設施生產部。

Abstract:
Trans-boundary air pollution is a crucial factor affecting air pollution, and its contribution may vary over the time and differ under various weather/climatic conditions. However, very few studies have comprehensively analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of trans-boundary air pollution. This talk will use Hong Kong and Singapore as examples to discuss the significant and special trans-boundary air pollution characteristics in high-density cities under various atmospheric conditions.
