MATH2070A - Algebraic Structures - 2019/20
Announcement
- Course Outline [Download file]
- There is no tutorial in the first week; the first tutorial will be held on Sep 11 (Wed).
- Schedule change in Week 2: The tutorial on Sep 9 (Mon) will be replaced by lectures (so we will have a double lesson for lectures on Sep 9), and then the double lesson lectures on Sep 11 (Wed) will be replaced by tutorials.
- The Midterm will be held on Oct 28 (Mon) during 2:30pm - 4:15pm in LSB LT4. We will cover only group theory (i.e. up to p.27 in the Lecture Notes and Homework 5).
- The due date for HW7 is postponed to Nov 21 (Thu).
- The due date for both HW7 and HW8 is further postponed to Nov 28 (Thu).
- Due to the shortening of Term 1 in 2019-20 and cancellation of the centralized final examination, we will use the following new assessment scheme for this course: n% for Homework (where n ranges from 0 to 8) and (100 - n)% for Midterm; here n is the number of HW solutions you handed in (at most 8 among HW 1-10).
- Note that we will only accept electronic copies (either scanned copies or photos) of your solutions for HW 7-10; please send them to Miss Dan Wang (Email: dwang@math.cuhk.edu.hk). Also note that HW 9 & 10 are based on materials not yet covered in classes.
- You are strongly recommended to study the remaining materials by yourself (especially if you plan to take more advanced algebra courses in the future) and HW 9 & 10 should be regarded as exercises to assist your study. Please feel free to ask the Lecturer or TAs for help whenever you encounter any difficulties.

Course Description
This course is intended as an introduction to modern abstract algebra and the algebraic way of thinking in advanced mathematics. The course focuses on basic algebraic concepts which arise in various areas of advanced mathematics, and emphasizes on the underlying algebraic structures which are common to various concrete mathematical examples.
Topics include:
Group Theory - examples of groups including permutation and dihedral groups, subgroups, the Theorem of Lagrange, group homomorphisms.
Ring Theory - examples of rings including the ring of integers and polynomial rings, integral domains, fields, ring homomorphisms, ideals and quotient rings.
Field Theory - examples of field extensions and finite fields.

Honesty in Academic Work
The Chinese University of Hong Kong places very high importance on honesty in academic work submitted by students, and adopts a policy of zero tolerance on cheating and plagiarism. Any related offence will lead to disciplinary action including termination of studies at the University. Although cases of cheating or plagiarism are rare at the University, everyone should make himself / herself familiar with the content of the following website:
