ABOUT GCR
The Global China Research Programme, established in September 2015, is a multi-disciplinary research programme with a global vision and a mission to promote research work relevant to China’s global engagement. Our key objectives are:
- To assess the economic opportunities and challenges for Mainland China and Hong Kong arising out of the Chinese government’s new strategies and policies;
- To evaluate the reception of and reactions to China’s global impact in Greater China and among China’s external partners;
- To study the institutional framework and mechanisms of governance and coordination that may facilitate regional cooperation and the management of issues arising out of China’s global activities;
- To examine the humanistic ramifications and interfaces of China’s global outreach with special reference to historical roots, inter-cultural exchanges, and diasporic settlements; and
- To explore Hong Kong’s unparalleled role and position in bridging China and the world across all of the above areas.
At present, twelve CUHK research institutes/centres have joined hands to undertake research work particularly relevant to the theme of global China research. These institutes/centres are the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (which serves as the secretariat of the Programme), the Asian Institute of Supply Chains and Logistics, the Aviation Policy and Research Center, the Centre for China Studies, the Centre for Global Health, the Centre for Innovation and Technology, the Centre for the Study of Islamic Culture, the Chinese Law Programme, the Institute of Chinese Studies, the Lau Chor Tak Institute of Global Economics and Finance, the Research Centre on Migration and Mobility, and the T. T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre. The GCR serves as the platform for synergizing the concerted efforts across Faculties and research institutes of the CUHK, capitalizing on the research expertise of our comprehensive research-intensive university.
Activities of the GCR include international and regional conferences, workshops to foster research collaboration, and research seminars. Research findings are published in academic journals, book chapters and books, as well as disseminated to the public in newspaper articles, policy briefs, and public talks. We have built a network of collaboration in 34 Belt and Road countries. CUHK is a member of the University Alliance of the Silk Road as well as a member of the University Alliance of the Belt and Road.
We invite you to visit our website to learn more about our activities. To facilitate public understanding of the Belt and Road regions, we have compiled a databank which includes the country profile and major statistics for seventy-one Belt and Road countries drawn from official government portals and international data sources, include the United Nations, World Bank, and World Economic Forum.
