Background

The Hong Kong Quality of Life Index aims at examining and monitoring the quality of life in Hong Kong, including personal, social, political, cultural, economic and environmental quality of life while encouraging cross-cultural comparison on quality of life and advancing international collaboration in the field.

Through the incorporation from faculty members from different disciplines, as well as advice and research of renowned local and international scholars, the Faculty of Social Science has compiled a composite index named CUHK Hong Kong Quality of Life Index in 2002. Starting from the year of 2006, the Index has been released annually at year-end. The CUHK Hong Kong Quality of Life Index serves as a framework based on which trend data can be regularly collected.


Objectives

1. measure and keep track of Hong Kong’s quality of life in the 21st century;
2. engage relevant parties in promoting and advocating quality of life in Hong Kong;
3. provide policy makers and the community with a useful reference tool; and
4. advocate the quality of life in Hong Kong and draw public attention to the issue of quality of life.


Methodology

The Hong Kong Quality of Life Index consists of 23 indicators that are grouped into five subgroups, namely Health, Social, Culture and Leisure, Economic, and Environmental sub-indexes. Five of the indicators are compiled based on data collected by the telephone surveys conducted by the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the University whilte the rest are obtained from the government and related institutions.

Note: In order to measure and monitor more aspects of the quality of life in Hong Kong, the number of sub-indices of the ‘CUHK Hong Kong Quality of Life Index’ has been increased from three to five since 2014, and the number of indicators included in the Index has been increased from 21 to 23.
