The Chinese University of Hong Kong has been tracking the public perception on the economic conditions in Hong Kong since 2000. The survey was taken over by the Centre for Quality of Life in 2008, since then the survey has been conducted quarterly. The survey focuses on three aspects: family financial situation, public's perception towards the business environment, the economic outlook, expected employment situation and their sentiment over consumption.
1. measure the greater public's perception towards Hong Kong's overall economic performance;
2. provide policy makers and the community with a useful reference tool
Roughly 500 Hong Kong residents aged 18 or above would be randomly selected to take part in the survey. They are asked to answer questions about their financial situation, their perception towards the business environment, the economic outlook, employment as well as their sentiment over consumption.
The survey is divided into three components:
The Index of Consumer Confidence is compiled from the scores of questions about their expection of their economic condition. The higher the index, the stronger is people's confidence about economic conditions.
The Index of Consumer Sentiment is compiled from the scores of questions about their financial situation. A higher index indicates people are more optimistic about the present situation and future development of economic conditions.
The Index of Employment Confidence is compiled from the score of the question about employment. A higher index shows a stronger confidence about employment situation.
