Professor Emma MacPherson Develops New Skin Cancer Detection Method
25October2022
Professor Emma MacPherson is a former Morningside Fellow, and is currently a professor in Warwick University’s Department of Physics. She leads the Terahertz Research Group, which recently designed a ‘skinometer’ capable of detecting malignant skin cancer cells. The skinometer uses pulses of light (from the terahertz part of the spectrum) to detect the cancer before surgery, thereby increasing surgery efficacy, reducing its duration, or even preempting the need for surgery.
