Honours Courses
The information on this page is applicable to students admitted to the CUHK in 2019-20.
If you already know what the Honours Courses are about (from academic counselling), and simply want to submit the application form for places in MATH1018 and MATH1038, click here.
What are the Honour Courses? What is their purpose?
- The Honours Courses are a group of MATH level-1000 and -2000 courses (with course code ending in `8' instead of `0'), at the core of the MATH curriculum, intended for mathematics-major students with good abilities, and with prospective further studies in mind.
- The Honours Courses are designed with the explicit purpose of preparing students who intend to acquire a wider and deeper understanding in mathematics, and who want to reap the full benefits of the Enrichment Stream or the `Enrichment-and-CAM' `Double Stream'.
Which Honour Courses are offered?
For the detail of the individual courses, refer to the CUSIS.
Course Code | Course Title | Semester offered | Intended for |
---|---|---|---|
MATH1018 | Honours University Mathematics | First Semester | First-Year students (`Freshmen') (Eligibility?) |
MATH1038 | Honours Linear Algebra I | First Semester | First-Year students (`Freshmen') (Eligibility?) |
MATH1058 | Honours Foundation of Modern Mathematics | Second Semester | First-Year students (Eligibility?) |
MATH2018 | Honours Advanced Calculus I | Second Semester | First-Year students (Eligibility?) |
MATH2028 | Honours Advanced Calculus II | First Semester | Second-Year students |

- (*): Students who intend to graduate in the Enrichment and CAM stream may take these courses in the second or third year of study.
How to graduate in the MATH programme with the Honours Courses?
This is the curriculum chart with the Honours Courses.
Am I eligible for MATH1018, MATH1038 as a freshman?
As a freshman, you will be eligible for MATH1018, MATH1038 if you satisfy any of these conditions:
- You are an Enrichment Mathematics Entrant.
- You have obtained 5** or 5* in HKDSE Mathematics Module 2.
- You have obtained 90% or above in Gaokao mathematics subject for `science students'.
- You have obtained permission by the Department of Mathematics, based on equivalent mathematical abilities, to take the courses.
Am I eligible for Honours Courses beyond the First Term of Study?
You will be eligible for taking any Honours Course as long as you fulfil the pre-requisites and co-requisites of the respective course. For the `overall road-map' listing the pre-requisite, see this chart.

How to apply for places in MATH1018, MATH1038?
Freshmen in the `Enrichment Mathematics Programme' are automatically registered to these courses.
If you are admitted into the CUHK via the HKDSE or the Gaokao, and not an MIEG student, click this link .
- If you are an MIEG first-year student, the Department of Mathematics will inform you on course selection matters concerned with MATH1010/MATH1018 via email.
- Other students who are interested in these courses may contact us through email directly. (Here is the contact information.)
How to apply for places in other Honours Courses?
MATH1058, MATH2018:
- Students registered in both MATH1018 and MATH1038 will be automatically enrolled in MATH1058, MATH2018 towards the end of the First Semester, and may continue as long as they meet the pre-requisite for the courses.
- Other students may enrol through CUSIS after grade release in the beginning of the Second Semester.
