This year, for the first time, all JD and LLM students enrolled in the International Legal Advocacy Course, participated in one of four international mooting competitions. These competitions provided an excellent means for students to develop their research, writing and advocacy skills and to have them benchmarked against top law schools from around the world.

Teams were entered in the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Competition, the Hong Kong Red Cross International Humanitarian Law Moot, the Willem C Vis (East) International Commercial Arbitration Moot and the Willem C Vis (Vienna) International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Each team was coached by a law teacher and supported by student coaches who had previously participated in one of these international moots.

The teams achieved great success in their respective moot competitions.

• In the Red Cross Moot, which was contested by 16 teams from 13 Asia-Pacific countries, the CUHK law school team won the prize for the best memorial.
• The Willem C Vis (East) moot was contested by 52 teams from 14 countries. In this moot, Spencer Wong Yin Chuen won the award for the best oralist from Greater China and received an honourable mention for his advocacy skills.
• In The Willem C Vis ( Vienna) moot 214 teams from 54 countries competed. After preliminary moots against teams from the Universities of Hamburg, St Gallen, Panamericana Mexico and HEC Paris, the CUHK team was one of 64 teams selected for the elimination round of the competition. CUHK reached the elimination round because of the outstanding advocacy of the team’s oralists, Justin Ho and Chester Hui. In the first elimination round the team defeated the National University of Mexico and in the second round lost to Stockholm University. To have made the top 32 teams out of 214 teams was a great achievement for first time competitors. Chester Hui received an honourable mention for his oral advocacy skills in the Vienna moot.

This is the first time that the CUHK law school has entered the Jessup Moot, the Red Cross Moot and the Vis Moot. The team’s achievements against strong international competition are a fitting recognition of all the hard work the team members and the coaches put into their respective competitions.

It is hoped that this year’s international mooting success will encourage more students to participate in the International Legal Advocacy programme and to build on the success of this year’s mooting teams.
