What is BME?
Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary study in which biomedical and engineering sciences are applied innovatively to solve health and medical problems for the benefit of mankind. There is a growing worldwide recognition that biomedical engineering will have an enormous impact on the upcoming improvement of health services and the emergence of new industries of biomedical-related products. Biomedical engineers will play key roles in designing innovative medical instruments and sensors, deploying the emerging infrastructure for health informatics, creating new biomaterials, and developing new medical biotechnologies.

What is Broad-based admission? What is the difference between “JS4401 - Bachelor of Engineering” and “JS4460 - BEng in Biomedical Engineering” in admission?
Since 2012, all admissions to CUHK Engineering were under broad-based admission (JS4401) to the Faculty of Engineering first. Students would be asked to select their majors (i.e. Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Information Engineering, etc.) after Year-1 study.
Starting from 2018 entry, we are glad that our department will be able to admit applicants directly to BME programme (JS4460). We believe that with direct programme admission, we can admit applicants with background more appropriate for BME programme. Students interested in biomedical engineering are encouraged to apply via JS4460 directly.
How is the admission priority score computed for JUPAS applications?
Students are expected to have completed at least two elective subjects plus the four core subjects. One of the electives should be Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science, or Mathematics Extended Module M1/M2. Priority scores are computed based on the Best 5. A higher weighting of 1.5 will be given to English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science, and one of the Mathematics subjects (either the core Mathematics or the M1/ M2 Extended Module).
Do I need Biology to apply to this programme?
All science subjects are equally weighted with a factor of 1.5. Some students in our programme missed some science subjects (including Biology) in their secondary school and can still do well in our programme. Our flexible articulation allows our students to take some remedial subjects for better underpinning if needed.

To give due recognition to JUPAS applicants with outstanding academic performance in specific HKDSE subjects, the University will has introduced a preferential HKDSE score conversion scale applicable to admission score calculation of all undergraduate programmes (except Medicine, and Medicine – Global Physician Stream). The conversion applies to Level 5 or above.

Local and non-local students with other qualifications can also apply through the non-JUPAS admission scheme. These qualifications include GCE, IB, SAT/AP and other overseas qualifications for university admission. Preferences are given to applicants with good grades in at least two of the following subjects - Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics. More detailed information are available at:

A non-JUPAS applicant may apply for "Admission with Advanced Standing" if he/she meets specific requirements (including GCE-AL, IB-HL, etc.). For students admitted with Advanced Standing, the minimum number of units for graduation may be reduced by up to 24. Applicants should indicate in the application form whether they would like to be considered for "Admission with Advanced Standing".

Many BME students participate in overseas exchange programmes around the world. - On-Campus Research Internships
Many BME students participate in research internships in our laboratories in the summer as well during regular terms. - Overseas Summer Research Internships

Any scholarships?
Ample scholarships are available through multiple sources - the Office of Admission and Financial Aids, Colleges, as well as Faculty of Engineering.
Department of Biomedical Engineering also provides subsidies to encourage students to participate in international competitions and conferences.
In 2021, over 25% of our newly admitted students have received Admission Scholarship
(in one-off or renewable offer). The highest admission scholarship received is up to
HK$145,000 per academic year.

What are the career prospects for BME graduates?
Our graduates pursue various BME related careers in engineering and product support, marketing and technical sale, laboratory and research, etc. They are hired in private industries including local and international companies, as well as public organizations like hospitals, government departments (e.g. EMSD), and other government-funded institutions. Our graduates are also sought by non-BME related companies, likely due to their interdisciplinary preparation and generic competence. A relative large percentage of our graduates pursue further studies both local and overseas. Most of them go deeper in a specific biomedical engineering area or some other related areas in engineering or science. Some go for other complementary study, including business administration, medicine, and law.

“I’ve always been passionate about biomedicine, and seeing a surgical robot in an operating theatre stemmed my curiosity about the use of biomedical technologies, which is how my journey in engineering began.
What inspires me most about engineering is its high applicability in other disciplines and the way it intersects with other fields. This is especially the case for biomedical engineering, and CUHK provides dynamic opportunities to explore sub-specialities like biomechanics, nanomedicine, tissue engineering etc. We get a lot of hands-on exposure on top of lectures, such as through laboratory work and hospital training, where I especially enjoyed learning from biomedical engineers at work in a hospital setting.
To me, being a good engineer means being creative and flexible in the face of challenges because solving problems is our pivotal role. The CUHK BME programme has equipped us with a broad knowledge base spanning across topics like anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, physics and math, as well as programming and laboratory skills. I also had the opportunity to do a summer research project on Nanomedicine in my freshmen year. Having these tools and experiences helps us translate technology into real-world solutions
I’m not alone in having multiple passions across disciplines, and we shouldn’t have to narrow ourselves down to one specific field. Meeting like-minded individuals at CUHK has been really refreshing. To this day, the people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve had
