What is Broad-based admission? What is the difference between “JS4401 - Bachelor of Engineering” and “JS4460 - BEng in Biomedical Engineering” in admission?

Since 2012, all admissions to CUHK Engineering were under broad-based admission (JS4401) to the Faculty of Engineering first. Students would be asked to select their majors (i.e. Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Information Engineering, etc.) after Year-1 study.

Starting from 2018 entry, we are glad that our department will be able to admit applicants directly to BME programme (JS4460). We believe that with direct programme admission, we can admit applicants with background more appropriate for BME programme. Students interested in biomedical engineering are encouraged to apply via JS4460 directly.

How is the admission priority score computed for JUPAS applications?

Students are expected to have completed at least two elective subjects plus the four core subjects. One of the electives should be Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science, or Mathematics Extended Module M1/M2. Priority scores are computed based on the Best 5. A higher weighting of 1.5 will be given to English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science, and one of the Mathematics subjects (either the core Mathematics or the M1/ M2 Extended Module).

Do I need Biology to apply to this programme?

All science subjects are equally weighted with a factor of 1.5. Some students in our programme missed some science subjects (including Biology) in their secondary school and can still do well in our programme. Our flexible articulation allows our students to take some remedial subjects for better underpinning if needed.

“I am honour to be part of BME family of CUHK. BME, as an inter-disciplinary subject, offers us abounding scientific research opportunities and a wonderful learning platform. We not only benefit from receiving forefront knowledges in the engineering and medical world through the undergraduate study, but also broaden our horizon on the cutting-edge world biomedical technology. Biomedical Engineering of CUHK has also enlightened my creativity on various medical devices and technologies since I met those passionate professors. With their unreserved assistance, I invented my first medical device on the area of stroke rehabilitation recently. Such device also leads me to win the Golden Technopreneur Award 2017 of Hong Kong Science & Technology Park Corporation (HKSTPC). Biomedical engineering of CUHK prepares me to be a highly-qualified professional in this booming sector.”

    Lau Fong Yung, Yolanda
    2021 BEng (Biomedical Engineering) graduate
Postgraduate Study – Medicine, University of Nottingham

“I’ve always been passionate about biomedicine, and seeing a surgical robot in an operating theatre stemmed my curiosity about the use of biomedical technologies, which is how my journey in engineering began.

What inspires me most about engineering is its high applicability in other disciplines and the way it intersects with other fields. This is especially the case for biomedical engineering, and CUHK provides dynamic opportunities to explore sub-specialities like biomechanics, nanomedicine, tissue engineering etc. We get a lot of hands-on exposure on top of lectures, such as through laboratory work and hospital training, where I especially enjoyed learning from biomedical engineers at work in a hospital setting.

To me, being a good engineer means being creative and flexible in the face of challenges because solving problems is our pivotal role. The CUHK BME programme has equipped us with a broad knowledge base spanning across topics like anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, physics and math, as well as programming and laboratory skills. I also had the opportunity to do a summer research project on Nanomedicine in my freshmen year. Having these tools and experiences helps us translate technology into real-world solutions

I’m not alone in having multiple passions across disciplines, and we shouldn’t have to narrow ourselves down to one specific field. Meeting like-minded individuals at CUHK has been really refreshing. To this day, the people I’ve met and the experiences I’ve had still inspire my work today. I am excited to use all the tools at my disposal to tackle the upcoming problems I’m passionate about.”
