李行德教授本科畢業於索思摩大學（Swarthmore College），主修英國文學，後赴加州大學洛杉磯分校攻讀語言學，獲語言學博士。研究興趣為語言與認知，從語言學、心理學及哲學等視角探討語言獲得與語言可習性問題、研究重點為粵語和普通話的母語獲得。李教授曾任香港中文大學文學院副院長（研究）、語言學及現代語言系主任、教務會優化雙語教育委員會主席；現任Language Acquisition 及 《當代語言學》等學術期刊編委。曾領導籌建數個早期兒童語言語料庫，包括香港粵語兒童語料庫（CANCORP），亦為香港兒童口語（粵語）能力量表（HKCOLAS）中粵語語法測試單元的核心設計者。
