Ageing and Disease
Ageing is an unavoidable process, beginning at conception and ending with death. Although ageing is not a disease, but diseases do become much more common among older persons. Disease may be distinguished from age-related physiological changes, described in this chapter.
Ageing: Different level Ageing may be considered at different levels. For example, Population ageing is the result of reductions in infant mortality and fertility, and reduction in mortality at older ages; organ systems of individuals age at different rates, but all show decline starting in early adult life; cellular ageing may be due to damage to DNA and cellular proteins, which may be regulated genetically.
