History
The history of the Centre can be traced back to the founding of the “Chinese Linguistics Research Centre” in 1966, which started off mainly focusing on the research of ancient texts and historical phonology. The Centre was renamed the “Chinese Language Research Centre” in 1978, placing great emphasis on language education and the raising of the standards of language teaching in Hong Kong. In 1980, the Centre received generous support from Mr. Tor-tai Ng, and consequently changed its name to the “T.T. Ng Chinese Language Research Centre”. Apart from being devoted to the research of language education, the Centre also initiated a number of research projects on southeastern Chinese dialects adopting a sociolinguistic approach. Since its founding, the Centre has emphasized both traditional and modern aspects of Chinese linguistics, combined theory with practice, and contributed to the study of the Chinese language.
