Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme 2023/24

Established in 2009 by the Research Grants Council (RGC), the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD programmes in Hong Kong’s universities.

The Fellowship Scheme will provide a competitive annual stipend and conference and research-related travel allowance per year up to three years.

The Hangeul Design Competition

Hangeul (Korean alphabets) is a writing system created by King Sejong the Great in 1443. To commemorate the invention of Hangeul and to promote the beauty and the excellence of it, Hangeul Day is celebrated annually on October 9th in Korea. 

For this year, the Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong is collaborating with Yang Won Sun Foundation to host a Hangeul-themed design competition. It is aimed to promote the interest in Hangeul among Hong Kong citizens and share the beauty of Hangeul through creative graphic designs. 

The Hangeul Design Competition, awarding prizes of HKD 45,000 in total, will be kicked-off on July 15th. The award presentation ceremony for the competition will be held on Oct 9th at the Korean Cultural Center (Central, PMQ).

Noticing that your organization has been promoting and hosting different activities in relation to Korean language and culture, we would like to express our deepest appreciation if you would help with the promotion of the competition. Posting printed posters or news feed on the social media are all welcomed.

[5th Korean Consul General Cup – Korean Speech Contest 2021] CUHK Students in Triumph!

We are pleased to announce that two students of the Korean language programme, Cheng Ka Yu (Major: Translation) and Leung Pok Man ( Major: Psychology) won the first place and the 2nd runner up in the 5th Korean Consul General Cup Korean Speech Contest held in Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong on 26 June 2021. They received a cash prize and Hong Kong to Seoul round trip air ticket provided by Korean Air.

CUHK Linguist Named Guggenheim Fellow

Professor Patrick C.M. Wong, Stanley Ho Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and Professor of Linguistics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), has received the 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship, a prestigious honour that recognises scholars who have demonstrated a previous capacity for exceptional work and ability in the field of arts and science. Grants are given to awardees to support continuous research advancement in their field.

Since its establishment in 1925, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has granted Fellowships to over 18,000 individuals, among whom are more than 125 Nobel laureates, winners of the Pulitzer Prize, Turing Award and other internationally recognised honours.

CUHK students excel in the German Speaking Contest for Students 2020

CUHK students have won 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes in the final of the German Speaking Contest for Students 2020, which took place on 21 Nov 2020 at the University of Hong Kong. The topic of the event was “A Future Without Plastics?”.

Ng, Yuk Man Vincy, the champion for level A2, has been awarded a scholarship for a two-week Goethe Institut language course in Germany. Chung, Pui Ting Ada, the first-runner up for level B1, has received a scholarship for a language course at the Goethe Institut Hong Kong. Li, Jiawen Coco, the 2nd runner up for level A, has been awarded a dinning coupon at “Biergarten” and a book coupon.

The German Speaking Contest for Students 2020 was organised by the Goethe Institut, the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD, the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Hong Kong, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University with the support of the Consulate General of Switzerland in Hong Kong and the Heinrich Böll Foundation and the ALBA Group.

The 10th Festive Korea - Better Together 

The Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong (Director Mr. PARK Jong-taekand the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Hong Kong are collaborating to launch the 10th Festive Korea with the theme "Better Together" during October and November 2020. Since its inauguration in 2011, Festive Korea has been the largest annual Korean cultural festival in Hong Kong featuring performances, exhibitions, Korean food, Korean films, and many other special Korean cultural and arts events.

In 2020, 22 programs will be held mostly online apart from the exhibitions. The theme of this year, "Better Together (同行)" conveys the message that with our concerted efforts, we can overcome the crisis together in this unprecedentedly extraordinary year. It also demonstrates the desire of Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong’s to support and console the people of the city through the multifarious arts programs showcasing the Korean culture.

[4th Korean Consul General Cup – Korean Speech Contest 2020] CUHK Students in Triumph!

We are pleased to announce that two students of the Korean language programme, CHAN Pui Kei (Major: Integrated BBA) and IP Shu Ming Sophie ( Major: English) won the first place in the 4th Korean Consul General Cup Korean Speech Contest held in Korean Cultural Center in Hong Kong on 17 July 2020. They received a voucher of HK$3000 each for travelling in Korea as the prize for the first-place winner. In spite of the joy, the award presentation ceremony has to be cancelled due to COVID19.

[Festive Korea 2019] Busan National Gugak Center – The Sounds of KOREA

The Busan National Gugak Center (BNGC) will visit Hong Kong once again and the rich cultural traditions of Korea will be featured through court music, folk music and the elegant traditional Korean dance. The Busan National Gugak Center (BNGC) is an organization committing to preserving and promoting the traditional performing art of the Busan and Yeongnam region of south-eastern Korea. Fun and Intercultural exchange: Meeting of German-speaking Students

On 2 October, the German team of the Modern Languages Section of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages hosted a “Meeting of German-speaking Students” at Si Yuan Amenities Centre, United College of CUHK.

In the delightful event, the incoming German-speaking exchange students, CUHK out-going exchange students who had stayed in German-speaking countries, German-speaking CUHK students and all students interested in the German language and culture had the chance to connect and to engage in intercultural exchanges.

As a special treat this year, the participants had the chance to play board games. Many students played the games enthusiastically while building bridges between cultures and connecting with the others who share the same passion to German language and culture.

Fun with Intercultural Exchange: Meeting with German-speaking Students

On 3rd October, the German team of the Modern Languages Section of the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages hosted a meeting with German-speaking students studying at CUHK at the United College Si Yuan Amenities Centre of CUHK.

Participants in the event had the chance to engage in intercultural exchanges.  It was so well-received by our German fans, including German-speaking students who are on exchange at CUHK, CUHK students who have studied abroad in German-speaking countries, German-speaking CUHK students and other students who are interested in the German language and culture .

As a  delight for enjoyment in the event, the participants had the chance to play board games. While they enjoyed the game enthusiastically, bridges between cultures and connection with other students who share the same passion for the German language and culture were built harmoniously.

CUHK Students excel in the first German Language Olympics for Students Hong Kong 2018

CUHK students won major prizes in the finals of the first German Language Olympics that took place on March 17, 2018 at CUHK. 

Wong, Hei Nam Ambrose from the Department of Medicine and Surgery was the Gold Medal recipient for Level A1 while Yuen, Hin Sing, a double Major student from the Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages and the Department of Music was another Gold Medal recipient for Level B1+, Cheung, Tsz Wun Kitty from the Department of English received the Bronze Medal prize for Level A1.

The Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages would like to congratulate our students for their outstanding achievements! 

The first German Language Olympics for Students in Hong Kong and Macau was organized by the Goethe-Institut Hongkong and local tertiary institutions including the Chinese University of Hong Kong, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Lingnan University, the University of Hong Kong, and the Vocational Training Council. This event was supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the consulates of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in Hong Kong, as well as the Lufthansa Group and Presence Switzerland.
