The remarkable experiences in BSc Public Health programme enable me to pursue a career in the area of digital health product research and development.   

During my undergraduate study in the public health program, I seized the opportunity to drill down various important global health problems such as the battles with chronic diseases. I worked as a research student helper on digital health research in a research center at the university. I was helping with the development of a digital screening platform for dementia, a chronic disease characterized by a decline of cognitive function. Currently, most dementia screening tests are in paper-and-pencil form and would require healthcare professionals to conduct the test face-to-face for at least 15 minutes. By leveraging the power of machine learning and big data, we are able to develop a digital platform to detect the risk of dementia by just drawing a simple figure on a tablet. The whole process can be completed in just a few minutes without the supervision of healthcare professionals. Therefore, the digital test could serve as a self pre-screening tool for dementia and improve clinical efficiency. This unique experience broadened my horizons on how technology could help alleviate healthcare burdens. Right now, I am working in a health technology start-up for product development.

LEUNG, Tin Chi Jonathan

2017 BSc in Public Health Graduate

After completing the Public Health programme, I pursued further study as a medical student of the Faculty of Medicine. I have started receiving clinical training in various public hospitals. My education in Public Health in the past could help me comprehend the large variety of physical, mental and social health problems the patients face in their lives. This experience helps me understand how I could become a more compassionate doctor to provide holistic care for patients in the future. It further helped me realise the importance of tackling health problems in the population level that could benefit the health of the wider community and save more lives.

As a medical student, I have a lot of opportunities to make use of my research and practical experiences gained in the Public Health programme. Last summer, I participated in a field trip to Yunnan organised by the Collaborating Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical Humanitarian Response. The field trip, led by Public Health professors, allowed me to use the knowledge in both Public Health and Medicine I learnt for conducting health needs assessments and health interventions in the rural community.

Many of my fellow Public Health graduates are now contributing to the healthcare system in different areas. I believe that the analytical and problem-solving skills graduates acquired in the Public Health programme will continue to help us make a difference for the health of people in Hong Kong and around the world.

WONG, Way Hang Jonathan

2016 BSc in Public Health Graduate

Completing the BSc Public Health programme has equipped me with knowledge on numerous health issues. In addition to practical public health skills such as epidemiology and biostatistics, the programme offered a wide range of courses covering various global and local public health topics. These knowledge and skills built a sound public health foundation for my later work as a Health Inspector at the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD).

A unique part of the programme is the practicum opportunity for students to experience public health work in the local healthcare field. I was attached to a community health centre and visited some patients who had difficulties in accessing healthcare services. This experience cemented my will to contribute in the frontline healthcare field, leading me to pursue further study in medicine eventually.

Professors and teachers of the School were passionate in teaching and always showed their support within and beyond the academic aspect. With their untiring support and guidance, I have exchanged to The University of Cambridge during my undergraduate study. This precious opportunity nurtured me to develop a global perspective for various health issues.

In an attempt to solve public health issues such as ageing population and non-communicable diseases, it is foreseeable that both local and international community would demand for more public health specialists in the future. Therefore, I hereby recommend you to enroll in this promising and meaningful programme and be the one to make a difference in the field of public health.

The four years spent in Public Health programme is fruitful and fun. Public Health people are keen to share ideas and work as a team. With the support of our department, we can always take proactive steps to implement our health promotional ideas in the real setting. Through the mentorship and internship program, I expanded my network, gained a precious chance to work in a world famous company and acquired valuable insights about public health related positions in the government, NGOs and private sectors. I am now responsible for promoting safety devices and providing trainings among medical staff and students in Hospitals. Those experiences during my study qualified me to secure this promising and challenging job in the medical devices field.

HUI Ka Long Aaron

2013 BSc in Public Health Graduate

The BSc Public Health programme has nurtured me with holistic public health knowledge from various disciplines.  My practicum in the Infection Control Branch of Center for Health Protection arranged by the School enabled me to gain some preliminary experiences of applying theories in real-life scenarios. I was given opportunities to assist in the training for health workers in elderly homes and conduct focus groups for an effectiveness evaluation programme.

I currently work in the Non-communicable Disease Division of the Department of Health and offer executive support to the Division’s surveillance, strategies and programmes against non-communicable diseases.  With the public health knowledge equipped by the programme and the experiences acquired from the practicum, I am grateful to join my colleagues from different backgrounds in the battle against non-communicable diseases.

Ha Wai Tsz Winnie

With the outbreak of SARS, H5N1 swept through Hong Kong and around the world, public health awareness is increasingly becoming important. Indeed, doctors and nurses provide medical services to individuals while public health professionals play equally important role in preventing the onset of diseases through various aspects from health education to health policies making in the community.

Public health curriculum not only equipped me with a sound foundation from biomedical knowledge to the perspectives of health promotion and protection, but also provided experiential learning opportunities which offered me a lens of humanities to glance through community health in a different way. I could never forget my first health promotion trip which made a big impression on me to rural China. It was a treasurable experience from which tailor-made health materials were designed for ethnic minority community. Despite all different backgrounds in the team, we worked hard to achieve the common goals of practicing public health in the field.

I am now working in an NGO (Non- governmental organisation) for health promotion and protection where I am able to march forward with my passion and dedication in protecting health for all.

LEE Kai Lung KB

The key elements of Public Health are prevention and health promotion. Different from traditional medicine study which is focus on clinical health in hospital, public health considers in a broader aspect, to have a macro point of view to study the whole phenomenon and causes of the community, and thus to plan different activities and interventions to prevent different health issues and improve the health and well-being of people.

A disease is not only simply triggered by single behavior, public health tells us that various elements should be overcome, among political level, society level and community level, we could have research and figure out the improvements and relief methods. Therefore, public health concerns a broad spectrum of issues, ranging from society intervention project, community needs assessment, social phenomenon, policy, etc.

I am used to work in a local NGO, AIDS Concern as a Programme Manager. The job duties are related to policy and promotion in HIV prevention and stigma elimination, which are different from ordinary work in NGO. After the completion of public health study, we could understand that health is affected by a wide range of factors, but not an action itself. For instance, to maintain our health, we know that we should eat more vegetable and do more exercises. Nevertheless, many elements would affect practicing these behaviors. Various variable on affecting health enable our work to be diverse and involve different aspects. Therefore, public health is an interesting field for me. At the front line, we may need to serve service users. Furthermore, we may need to communicate with doctors. Even further, we may engage some legislators or to cooperate with the media for promotion. Meanwhile, public awareness of HIV in Hong Kong is relatively low. It makes prevention and stigma elimination more difficult and challenging. This is exactly where the public health approach fits.
