GE Teacher’s Retreat 2010: Knowing Our Students
(May 13, 2010)

The RCGE organized a GE Teacher’s Retreat 2010: Knowing Our Students in conjunction with the Office of University General Education.  The focus of this activity was to allow teachers to gain an understanding of the challenges that the 3 + 3 + 4 academic reform would pose for the university general education curriculum.  In the course of this activity, Dr. Leung Mei Yee, in two sessions respectively entitled “Assessment and the enhancement of GE learning” and the “The characteristic of 2009 freshmen and the design of foundation year in 2012”, explored with general education teachers the issue of how course evaluations assist teachers in improving their teaching and allow them to draw a profile of the current incoming students.  Furthermore, Mr. Chan Wai Leung reported on the findings of the RCGE’s Study of the New Liberal Studies Curriculum in High Schools under the title New Liberal Studies Curriculum in High Schools and University General Education Learning, and explored the connections between the new program and the university general education curriculum.  Lastly, Ms Ng Hiu Chun, in the session entitled Deliberating on Outcome-based Approach in GE teaching and learning, considered together with the teachers how to meaningfully apply an Outcome-based Pedagogy in the general education curriculum so as to assist teachers in improving their teaching of the general education curriculum.  The responses collected from the participants after the conference show that all of the participants who were interviewed acknowledged that participation in this activity was valuable.
