Showcase 7: Synthetic biology and our society
Introduction:
This project is a showcase of good practice in engaging students in a global competition called the
International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM). The project is impressive in that it engaged students
in the tasks required for iGEM, which were both intellectually challenging and time consuming. What the
students achieved is impressive too, as evidenced by their awarding-winning performance in three
consecutive years and their active involvement in explaining synthetic biology to high school students.
The project was also well disseminated through press releases and media coverage. The websites of iGEM
teams (2013-15) are accessible by the public.
