Showcase 5: Multidisciplinary e-learning platform for medication safety (CU MELODY)
Introduction:
This project is recommended as a showcase of good practice in multidisciplinary experiential learning and eLearning. CU MELODY consisted of three main components – community outreach (CU CHAMPION), online e-learning platform (CU CATALYST) and ward teaching. The student outreach team, CU CHAMPION, was formed to promote health and medication safety to the elderly in the community in four consecutive years (2013-2016). An inter-departmental cross-disciplinary online platform, CU CATALYST, was launched to enhance the team’s knowledge in medication safety with a series of 12 medication safety videos. Ward teaching was also provided to allow students to discover medication errors and medication safety issues in a ward setting. Evaluation showed that there were significant benefits to students. The projects brought along positive impacts not only to CUHK teachers and students, but also to the broader Hong Kong community as well. The multidisciplinary approach provided students with the opportunity to experience real-life scenarios in the medication industry. Following its outstanding achievements in 2013-2016, the MELODY program was converted into a credit-bearing summer elective course starting in summer 2017. In 2019, the CU CHAMPION is still running to provide community service to the Hong Kong society. The overall achievements of this project are impressive.
