About Us

The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is based at the Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH), a 1,637 bed tertiary referral teaching hospital managed by the Hospital Authority (HA) but affiliated with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

The CUHK department is distinct from, but functionally integrated with the HA Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. Professor Gavin Joynt is the Chairman of the CUHK Department, Honorary Director of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at PWH for HA, and HA Cluster Coordinator (Intensive Care) of the New Territories East Cluster (NTEC). Professor Gavin Joynt is also the HA Honorary Chief of Service of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at PWH and HA Cluster Coordinator (Anaesthesia) of the New Territories East Cluster (NTEC).

The CUHK department is mainly involved in teaching and research while the HA department is responsible for providing services for Anaesthesia, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine, and for all staff and management of the Operating Theatres (OT), Sterile Supply Unit (SSU), and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
