Between the Lines: Writing Short Fiction
Conducted by Nicolette Wong, Writer in Residence
Supported by Emily Olsson, Intern
An introduction to the fundamentals of writing short stories, this course combines brief lectures on craft and workshop critiques. Throughout the three-month course, students will read selected works of prose by authors from diverse cultural backgrounds, as they experiment with different genres in their own writing. Discussion topics include narrative structure, point-of-view, conflict, character development, and effective dialogue. There will also be discussion about revision and how to develop one’s voice as a writer. The instructor will provide personalised feedback on students’ work, while the group engages in peer review and creative exchange. Outstanding works will be selected for a student writing anthology, to be published in 2021.
