In addition to satisfying the general requirements for the Ph.D. degree as laid down by the Graduate School, applicants must hold a Master’s degree in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, or a language-related field of study awarded by this University or a recognized university. Applicants who do not hold a Master's degree awarded by this University or a recognized university are required to have completed the first-year course of the Master's program before they are considered for admission. Applicants from outside Hong Kong who are nonnative speakers of English must submit an IELTS or TOEFL result within 2 years. Applicants should have had at least one year of professional experience in a relevant field.
Applicants are required to submit a 1500-word research proposal and/or sample research paper(s) with their initial application, and attend an interview whenever feasible. The interview shall examine their knowledge of the proposed field of study as described in the research proposal.
