Wong Nim-yan in Six Objects: The scholar of Hong Kong literature takes a walk down memory lane

It is a 1975 edition published by a small Hong Kong publisher and may not be as valuable as a 1940s mainland Chinese edition, but it is full of annotations handwritten by Professor Lo when she prepared for class. Take the well-known snippet of ‘Fire Clouds’ for example. The author writes, ‘For a brief moment the sky gives the illusion of forming this object or that, but in fact, there are no distinguishable shapes; there is nothing anymore.’ Professor Lo’s marginalia: ‘So is it in life.’ Some of the sticky tags in the book became discoloured and dog-eared, while some are still fresh and crisp. She must have reread it over the years and kept seeing new things. From her notes I realize lesson preparation has less to do with looking up hard facts about a literary work, and more to do with immersing yourself into it and coming up with your own reflections.

Public Online Lectures: Arts and Humanities in the Face of Global Challenges——Writers in Quarantine? Rethinking the concept of 'Hong Kong southbound writers'

Writers in Quarantine? Rethinking the concept of 'Hong Kong southbound writers'

Speaker: Prof Wong Nim Yan, Dept. of Chinese Language and Literature

Date: 19 April 2020 (Sunday)
Time: 3pm - 4pm

Language: Cantonese

Format: Online via Zoom

Recording Archive: http://www.arts.cuhk.edu.hk/web/en-gb/about-us/faculty-news/14-news/549-for-sharing-recorded-webinars-from-april-to-may-2020

The literati headed south from the mainland China to Hong Kong during 1930s-40s include Cai Yuanpei, Xu Dishan, Xiao Hong, Dai Wangshu and Ye Lingfeng. Some appreciated these “southbound writers” had brought vibrant and charismatic culture to the city. Some considered these writers had encroached on the cultural sovereignty of the local literati, masking the original palette of Hong Kong literature. Southbound writers were always in a sort of “quarantine” in terms of academic classification and recognition. Does this “quarantine” convey a positive value in today’s context ? At this very moment of challenges, it is worth rethinking and revisiting the works, life stories, publications and impacts of these southbound writers.

Wong Nim Yan, Associate Professor of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Chinese University of Hong Kong; Director of Hong Kong Literature Research Centre. In recent years, she has explored the Hong Kong-China perspectives in Hong Kong literature.

Interview with Prof. Kwok Bit-Chee: They Stand on the Shoulders of Giants——Chinese Dialectologist

Over 50 million people are native speakers of Southern Mǐn, which is mainly spoken in southeast Fujian, eastern and western Guangdong, the coastal areas of Hainan, southeast Zhejiang and Taiwan. The language is interesting in that many words can be pronounced in a colloquial or a literary way. Prof. Kwok Bit-chee, who has been delving into historical linguistics and Chinese dialectology, has unraveled the mysteries surrounding the two modes of pronunciation.

Professor Kwok trusts his project will benefit language education as it reveals the rules governing compound formation. It also uncovers some lesser-known features of the Mǐn languages and deepens our understanding of their speakers. He says, ‘The academic freedom at CUHK is the key to the smooth progression of my research.’

Having a colloquial and a different, literary pronunciation is a common feature of the Sinitic languages. The literary mode is usually used when it comes to loanwords and literary works, while the colloquial mode is used in the vernacular. ‘Since the Mǐn languages retain rich archaic features lost in their Sinitic counterparts, they are historically significant,’ Professor Kwok remarks.

112 CUHK Students Awarded Link University Scholarship

112 students of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) have been awarded the Link University Scholarship 2019/20 (Link Scholarship) in recognition of their outstanding achievements in academic studies and community service. A total of 190 undergraduates was selected from eight local tertiary institutions for the Scholarship this year, representing close to 60% are from CUHK. The CUHK recipients not only excel in their studies, but also demonstrate strong leadership and presentation and communication skills by which they stood out among the nearly 800 applicants. CUHK is pleased with and encouraged by this record result.

......

Another scholarship recipient, Lucien Chiu, Year 3 student in Chinese language and Literature, also comes from a grassroots family. She had always dreamed of getting into a university to improve her family’s living conditions. She said, “I still remember the difficult time in secondary school learning English with very limited financial support. Knowing that students who are from humble background often lack learning resources and support, I signed up as a volunteer tutor in an NGO after entering university, to provide free tutorial service to those students in need.” Lucien has dreamed of being an author since her childhood. To promote literature on campus and in the community, Lucien is not only an assistant editor of a student association’s publication in the University, but also committed to organising literature activities for the public. She has been very much encouraged by receiving the Link Scholarship which will support her to further study for a master’s degree without adding financial burden on her family.
