Mr. Patrick S.K Fang, former Vice President of United College submitted a proposal for the establishment of the Department of Electronics

United College first offered elective courses included basic theories of electronics, telecommunications, electrical network analysis, vacuum tube and solid-state parts design

1970

The Department of Electronics (offered Bachelor of Science majoring in Electronics) separated from the Department of Physics

Department of Electronics was located in Caine Lane, Hong Kong Island, in the Faculty of Science of the United College

Professor Charles K Kao appointed as the first Chairman of the EE department

The first batch of students (majoring in Electronics) admitted

1972

The Department of Electronics established a Master of Science programme

The EE Department was re-located in Science Centre North Block in CUHK

1974

12 students graduated with a degree in Electronics, and 2 of them received first-class honors

Graduates recognized by the British Institute of Electrical Engineers as a professional qualification

1975

Professor Y.W. Lam elected Chairman of the EE department

Work-study Programme was introduced

The Bachelor Programme was accredited by IEEE

1977

Professor C.F. Chen elected Chairman of the EE department

1980

The Department of Electronics established a doctoral program, becoming the first department to offer a doctoral program

1982

The first EE doctoral student graduated and was also the first doctoral student in CUHK

1985

Professor Y.W. Lam re-elected Chairman of the EE department

1989

The department renamed “Department of Electronic Engineering”

1990

The Department of Electronic Engineering established MPhil-PhD Programme

1991

The Department joined the new-established Faculty of Engineering

Professor Ian H. Wilson elected Chairman of the EE department

The EE Department moved to Ho Sin Hang Engineering Building

The student curriculum changed from four-year to three-year
