With the complementary developments of the economies of Hong Kong and the mainland in terms of trade or direct investments, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has positioned itself as one of the leading tertiary institutions in curriculum developments in response to the emergent needs of the community.

 

 

Formerly known as China Career Development Award Programme, the Global Internship Programme (GIP) – Mainland Part launched in 1997. It was part of a coordinated effort to supplement the new curriculum developments by offering, as an added skill to improve the competitiveness of graduates in the job market, courses on contemporary China and an early exposure to the working environment on the mainland. GIP has been proven to be a valuable, innovative and viable avenue to enable CUHK to train and educate the next generation for serving the interests and needs of Hong Kong. Through supporting this Programme, companies will be identified with the very worthy cause of investing in the future of Hong Kong.

 

In its first seven years, the Global Internship Programme – Mainland Part was a two-part programme. The first part offered workplace training at state enterprises supplemented by a series of lectures, visits and excursions. The second part offered a summer internship scheme for next-to-final year students to work in China. Since 2005, the Programme was carried on with more focus on preparing students of various disciplines for internship placements. With the objective to further enhance students’ career development, the Programme successfully sent around 100 students each year to undergo internships in major cities of the Mainland so as to provide students with work exposure in different parts of China. In addition, over 20 medical students were placed to a hospital in Beijing.

 

 

 

In 2006, building on the success of the Global Internship Programme – Mainland Part, and in line with the University’s mission on internationalization, the internship programme was expanded to overseas cities e.g. Melbourne, Sydney, Toronto, Dublin and Orlando. The overseas programme offered students an exposure to a foreign culture and a first-hand experience of the work environment of the host countries. In recent years, students were mainly placed in ASEAN countries and countries along one-belt-one road, such as Czech Republic, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Sir Lanka, etc. Over the years, around 7,000 students have benefited from the programme.
