CUHK Employees General Union
Venue: Rm 103, Wong Foo Yuan Building
Date: 14-15 / 01 / 2020 (Tue - Wed)
Time: 11:00am–6:30pm
Details (in Chinese only)
Dear members and colleagues:
The indiscriminate assaults on citizens at Yuen Long MTR station and the
dereliction of duty by the police at the incident have ignited much
justified anger.
Many have been arrested since protests broke out against the Extradition
Amendment Bill. Among them are demonstrators as well as social workers
and aid workers who were providing humanitarian aid. Some CU students have
also been arrested. The arbitrary arrests and the tortures reportedly imposed
on the detainees are causing serious damage to our rule of law.
Different sectors with their associations and trade unions and even
the General Chamber of Commerce have all spoken out against the government’s
refusal to withdraw the bill. But these voices as well as a two-million-strong
march have all been ignored by the government. The Hong Kong Confederation
of Trade Unions (HKCTU) now calls a general strike to get our demands heard:
the government must formally withdraw the controversial bill and must establish
an independent committee to investigate recent unrest, for social justice
needs to be upheld.
The CUHK Employees General Union is participating in this action and would
like to call upon those members and colleagues in non-emergency roles
to participate in the strike on Aug 5 (Mon) and attend the congregations
across the territory that day. We recommend participating colleagues to
communicate beforehand with their supervisors for work arrangements. Colleagues
may also explain their rationale for joining the strike and explain their
views on the bill and the recent police violence.
We also call on the University management and department heads to
be understanding of the action, to make flexible work arrangements and
not to penalize or discriminate against participating colleagues in any
way.
Details of the strike and the congregations are as follows:
Civil servant assembly: 7pm-9pm, Aug 2 (Fri), Charter Garden. The police
have already issued a Letter of No Objection to this assembly.
Aug 5 Strike (Please inform your supervisor beforehand. CUEGU is
also emailing the University management on this.)
Aug 5 Congregations across Hong Kong (The police have yet to issue
a Letter of No Objection. Please monitor for updates.)
