Postgraduate Students Homepage

Background:

In 2001, the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care became an independent Post Graduate Division in the Faculty of Medicine. Since that date we have worked towards establishing an ongoing research post graduate program. The Department has for many years been strong in the area of clinical research. By promoting a post graduate research program we hope to extend our research excellence to fundamental laboratory research.

Personnel:

The Division has a head who is appointed on a yearly basis. The current Head of Division is Professor Anna Lee PhD, MPH, FACE, a specialist in epidemiological research.

Student enrolment:

We currently have 7 postgraduate students (All fulltime PhD’s ). Some students are attached to a competitive grant.

Research projects:

These have depended mainly on the interests and availability of supervisors. Potential projects can be broadly classified into:

  1. Clinical and epidemiological research relating to anaesthesia, pain management or intensive care,
  2. Laboratory based research relating to the assay of anaesthetic drugs and,
  3. Projects involving animal research (dependent on grants).

Course details:

Students are expected to do full-time research under the supervision of a staff member. They may also be asked to provide occasional services to the department. The Faculty arranges a number of compulsory courses in laboratory methods and biostatistics that the student is expected to attend and pass. Students are expected to present their work at regular departmental seminars. They are also encouraged to present their work at international research meetings and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals

Current policy regarding admissions:

We currently have 7 full-time and funded research positions. A studentship is provided. We admit two to three new students per year. The current successful admission rate is 12%. Students are enrolled for 2 (MPhil) or 4 (PhD) years. Conversion from MPhil to PhD is possible. Some candidates with a master's degree can enter year 2 of the PhD program.

Applications are made through the Graduate School. Students with a strong background in the areas of academic excellence, research ability, communication skills and leadership ability are also encouraged to apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme. (see http://www2.cuhk.edu.hk/gss/hkphd/#Hong_Kong_PhD_Fellowship_Scheme for more details). Applications are invited after September, candidates are selected in late January with offers being made by the Graduate School in March and April and successful candidates are admitted in August. Hostel accommodation is available. Part-time places for local candidates are also available.
