Founded in 1963 with its mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has been dedicated to promoting traditional Chinese culture, and nurturing leaders who possess specialized knowledge and cultural literacy. Riding on the success of the fundraising dinners held in 2013 and 2015, CUHK hosted a Gala Dinner on Friday, 1 September 2017 at the Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Over 140 tables of guests graced us with their presence to raise funds for the promotion of Chinese arts and culture.
A number of renowned artists, community leaders, and outstanding alumni, staff and students of CUHK performed items from traditional Chinese arts and culture at the Gala Dinner. The event raised more than HK$40 million to support CUHK’s future development and education endeavours, in particular for promoting Chinese culture and student development.
A spectacular show was staged at the Dinner showcasing the essence of Chinese arts and culture. The classic Cantonese opera “Butterfly and Red Pear Blossom”, was performed by Ms. Chan Po-chu and Ms. Mui Shet-sze, both famous Cantonese opera stars and eminent apprentices of Dr. Pak Suet Sin. The Peking Opera “Flee by Night”, was performed by Mr. Wang Lijun, a first class national actor; and a face swap performance by Mr. Rock Tsai, a master performer from Taiwan. Other features included: a Chinese singing and orchestral performance presented by Mr. Raymond Young, former Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, and the Yao Yueh Chinese Music Association, a vocal performance by Ms. Paddy Lui and Professor Bai Meng, a drum performance by Huaqiao University’s drum team, singing from a CUHK Music student Ms. Michelle Siu, and dancing by Mrs. Susan Tang, Ms. Shelley Lee, Mrs. Pauline Chan, Ms. Melissa Kaye Pang, Ms. Elly Tsang and Dr. Philip Wong.
