What is BME?

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary study in which biomedical and engineering sciences are applied innovatively to solve health and medical problems for the benefit of mankind. There is a growing worldwide recognition that biomedical engineering will have an enormous impact on the upcoming improvement of health services and the emergence of new industries of biomedical-related products. Biomedical engineers will play key roles in designing innovative medical instruments and sensors, deploying the emerging infrastructure for health informatics, creating new biomaterials, and developing new medical biotechnologies.

Programme highlights

  • Our BEng (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering programme is jointly supported by the CUHK Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine. It is coherently organized under the CUHK Department of Biomedical Engineering to support student learning on campus, in hospital, and with our partners local and overseas.
  • Our programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and prepares our students well for industrial and academic placements. On the industrial side, since 2012, our graduates have been well received by our medical device industries. On the academic side, around 25% of our graduates pursue further studies in various engineering and medical disciplines (some all the way to PhD).
  • CUHK BME students will have opportunities to learn on-site how technology can enhance clinical services and patient benefits. Besides having the Prince of Wales Hospital as our teaching hospital, CUHK will also have our own private hospital to be launched in 2019-20.
  • Our students enjoy support for overseas exchanges, research and industrial internships, and global competitions.
  • Our top students with interest and track record in research are eligible for potential enrollment in the CUHK MBChB program in an accelerated track.

How many students we are admitting each year?

    Around 50.

What qualities of the applicants do we look for?

We look for students who like science subjects, love to EXPLORE, INNOVATE and CARE, passionate for learning in breadth as well as in depth, ready to acquire new knowledge across disciplines, and eager to apply their learning to solve real-life problems in the medical and healthcare industries.

What is the JUPAS code for this programme?

What is Broad-based admission? What is the difference between “JS4401 - Bachelor of Engineering” and “JS4460 - BEng in Biomedical Engineering” in admission?

Since 2012, all admissions to CUHK Engineering were under broad-based admission (JS4401) to the Faculty of Engineering first. Students would be asked to select their majors (i.e. Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Information Engineering, etc.) after Year-1 study.

Starting from 2018 entry, we are glad that our department will be able to admit applicants directly to BME programme (JS4460). We believe that with direct programme admission, we can admit applicants with background more appropriate for BME programme. Students interested in biomedical engineering are encouraged to apply via JS4460 directly.

How is the admission priority score computed for JUPAS applications?

Students are expected to have completed at least two elective subjects plus the four core subjects. One of the electives should be Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science, or Mathematics Extended Module M1/M2. Priority scores are computed based on the Best 5. A higher weighting of 1.5 will be given to English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Science, and one of the Mathematics subjects (either the core Mathematics or the M1/ M2 Extended Module).

Do I need Biology to apply to this programme?

All science subjects are equally weighted with a factor of 1.5. Some students in our programme missed some science subjects (including Biology) in their secondary school and can still do well in our programme. Our flexible articulation allows our students to take some remedial subjects for better underpinning if needed.

Any details about the weighting of this programme for JUPAS applicants?

Based on Best 5 HKDSE subject results with subject weighting:
    subject weighting

To give due recognition to JUPAS applicants with outstanding academic performance in specific HKDSE subjects, the University will has introduced a preferential HKDSE score conversion scale applicable to admission score calculation of all undergraduate programmes (except Medicine, and Medicine – Global Physician Stream). The conversion applies to Level 5 or above.

Any Admission Statistics of JUPAS Applicants of BME programme (2020 entry)?

    Admission score (BEST 5)

    Preferential HKDSE score conversion scale^
    - Median: 29, Lower Quartile: 27.5

^ To give due recognition to JUPAS applicants with outstanding academic performance in specific HKDSE subjects, the University has introduced a preferential HKDSE score conversion scale applicable to admission score calculation of all undergraduate programmes (except Medicine, and Medicine – Global Physician Stream). The conversion applies to Level 5 or above.

    (level 5** = 8.5, level 5* = 7, level 5 = 5.5, level 4 = 4, level 3 = 3, level 2 = 2, level 1 = 1 for Category A subjects)

    Total Reference Score#
    - Median: 25

    # The Total Reference Score is the total score of the applicant calculated based on the programme selection principle (where level 5** = 7, level 5* = 6, level 5 = 5, level 4 = 4, level 3 = 3, level 2 = 2, level 1 = 1 for Category A subjects. For Category C: Other Language subjects, Grade A = 5, Grade B = 4, Grade C = 3, Grade D = 2, Grade E = 1).

How about non-JUPAS applicants with other academic qualifications?

Local and non-local students with other qualifications can also apply through the non-JUPAS admission scheme. These qualifications include GCE, IB, SAT/AP and other overseas qualifications for university admission. Preferences are given to applicants with good grades in at least two of the following subjects - Physics, Chemistry, Biology, or Mathematics. More detailed information are available at:
    non-JUPAS local
    non-JUPAS International

A non-JUPAS applicant may apply for "Admission with Advanced Standing" if he/she meets specific requirements (including GCE-AL, IB-HL, etc.). For students admitted with Advanced Standing, the minimum number of units for graduation may be reduced by up to 24. Applicants should indicate in the application form whether they would like to be considered for "Admission with Advanced Standing".

Mainland students, who are current Gao Kao candidates, should apply through the National Colleges and Universities Enrollment System. More detailed information are available at: Link

What are the career prospects for BME graduates?

    Career prospects for BME graduates

Our graduates pursue various BME related careers in engineering and product support, marketing and technical sale, laboratory and research, etc. They are hired in private industries including local and international companies, as well as public organizations like hospitals, government departments (e.g. EMSD), and other government-funded institutions. Our graduates are also sought by non-BME related companies, likely due to their interdisciplinary preparation and generic competence. A relative large percentage of our graduates pursue further studies both local and overseas. Most of them go deeper in a specific biomedical engineering area or some other related areas in engineering or science. Some go for other complementary study, including business administration, medicine, and law.

“I am honour to be part of BME family of CUHK. BME, as an inter-disciplinary subject, offers us abounding scientific research opportunities and a wonderful learning platform. We not only benefit from receiving forefront knowledges in the engineering and medical world through the undergraduate study, but also broaden our horizon on the cutting-edge world biomedical technology. Biomedical Engineering of CUHK has also enlightened my creativity on various medical devices and technologies since I met those passionate professors. With their unreserved assistance, I invented my first medical device on the area of stroke rehabilitation recently. Such device also leads me to win the Golden Technopreneur Award 2017 of Hong Kong Science & Technology Park Corporation (HKSTPC). Biomedical engineering of CUHK prepares me to be a highly-qualified professional in this booming sector.”
