6 Job Openings are available as follows: Principal Investigator: Professor Raymond Tong Project Title/Lab Name: Soft Robotics for Upper-Limb and Lower-Limb Rehabilitation Abstract/Description:
This project aims to develop a 3D-printed soft robotic (hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder, knee, ankle) for rehabilitation training based on the technology in Soft-Elastic Composite Actuator and intention-driven control system to facilitate neuroplasticity in the brain. The objectives of this project are: (i) to facilitate better hand, upper limb and lower limb recovery on more stroke survivors and elderly in society with the soft robotic design, (ii) to 3D-print soft robotics with our advanced design and control algorithm to provide more function tasks training. Stroke remains the global leading causes of long-term disabilities. As a result, the role of rehabilitation robotics becomes increasingly prominent in enhancing the quality of life(QOL) of the stroke survivors. However, current metal robotic system seems to be very restricted in design due to the motor size and weight. This limitation also affects the training tasks that can be done using the device. Soft robotics, on the other hand is a new approach, which are more compliant and can provide more degree of freedoms to generate more upper limb functions. This project will continuously support the leading role in rehabilitation robotic development; and launch the new advanced healthcare products and services in the region and overseas. Job Requirements:
Applicants should have (a) self-motivation, a good sense of responsibility and strong problem-solving skills; (b) good communication and writing skill; and (c) preferably at least one of the following experiences to fit the need of our different projects: SolidWork/ LabView/SPSS; Soft robots design; Signal processing; Control algorithm design; or Stroke rehabilitation.
Job Duties:
Duties include (1) assisting in the development of soft robots for rehabilitation; (2) conducting clinical trial with stroke subjects, persons after stroke and persons with disability; (3) writing journal papers and reports, (4) analysing data; and (5) performing other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Principal Investigator: Professor Raymond Tong Project Title/Lab Name Simultaneous Dual-Task Cycling Exercise Training on Cognitive Function for the Elderly Abstract/Description:
Cognitive decline is related to ageing, which can progress to become mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. Hong Kong is facing the ageing population challenge and we would like to keep the elderly to have a good quality of life and independence. Maintaining cognitive function will be essential and important. Regular exercise has been shown to provide some cognitive benefits in healthy and cognitively impaired elderly, but the training type and intensity are remaining vary and unclear. Dual-task cognitive training software (game, VR or AR) has also shown a positive benefit to cognitive function in the elderly. Recent studies showed that combined exercise-cognitive simultaneously has better beneficial effects on cognitive function. Cycling is a safe aerobic exercise. The new system can adjust the training intensity based on the real-time muscle activities (electromyography, EMG) to provide aerobic exercise, and together with simultaneous dual-task cognitive training. It should provide an effective and safe platform for the elderly to improve their cognitive function. The system will be easy to install and the subject can safely conduct the exercise without involving a lot of manpower, which will be cost effective in providing a better quality of healthcare training in promoting cognitive health.
