Tsinghua University

Guqin is a plucked seven-string ancient Chinese musical instrument, one of the oldest musical instruments in Chinese history. Chengxi Bei, a fourth-year undergraduate student in the Department of History at Tsinghua University and president of the Tsinghua Student Guqin Club, is presenting the famous composition “Shen Ren Chang (Harmony Between Man and God)”. According to legend, this piece was composed by the ancient emperor Yao (尧) during his New Year rituals to the heavens in the Neolithic period. The music expresses the scene of the festival in which the gods and people celebrate together in great joy.

Scenes evoked from a bygone era, like hazy images seeped in silk padding, appropriately vivid and faded.… The women are sitting on small benches -- daydreaming, relaxing in the shade, sheltering from the sun, picking rice, lighting a fire, cooking soup, embroidering, and gazing into a mirror. All these behavioral actions are demonstrated using a cattail fan. This dance does not exhibit fancy footwork or beautiful dance positions, but, rather, the "flames" of everyday life, focusing on the “hidden” elegance, sophistication, comforting and routine gestures of day-to-day living that may go unnoticed. Asian femininity, the traditional qipao, Shanghainese women —- this dance showcases the artistry and aesthetic of daily life during that era.

沁晕在丝绵里的旧事，最是浓淡相宜。我们在小板凳上发呆，乘凉、遮阳、挑米、生火、煲汤、绣花、照镜子… 所有的行为语言靠一把蒲扇来完成。这段舞蹈不是靠“跳” 和 “美” 来支撑的，而是真实生活里的 “烟火气” ，更多的是藏在淡雅素色中的考究和精致，是哪怕日常生活的举手投足也不会丢失的舒服和熨帖。东方女性、民族旗袍、上海女人，舞蹈赋予了那个时代新的舞台审美和艺术生命。

Connecticut Chinese Dance is a registered non-profit organization, run by volunteers and nonprofessional dancers. Our goal is to enhance communication between ethnic groups among the CT community and to promote respect and appreciation of our diverse cultures and the performing arts.

“送别 (Farewell)" is a parting song with lyrics by Hong Yi (Li Shutong) which he set in 1915 to the melody of "Dreaming of Home and Mother" composed in 1851 by American John P. Ordway. Established in 2004, the Yale Chinese Chorus is an amateur singing group comprised of Yale students, scholars, faculty, and staff, as well as other professionals and family members from the Greater New Haven area.

About the Yale Chinese Chorus

In the past 16 years, we have organized, participated, and hosted multiple music events both locally at Yale and in communities around Connecticut as well as around the nation and even in the world. Some of the renowned musical venues that we have performed at include Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Music Center at Strathmore, Chicago's Symphony Center, Sydney Opera House, Frankford Radio Symphony Hall, Guangzhou Opera House, and Shanghai Oriental Art Center. In addition to choral singing, we also occasionally teach music theory and ear training.

The Yale Chinese Chorus was the major force behind the 2011 premiere performance of “Ask the Sky and the Earth - an Oratorio Cantata for the Sent-down Youth”, with lyrics by Wei Su and music by Dongling Huo (Tony Fok). In 2019, the Yale Chinese Chorus was the core group behind the China Now Festival Chorus in presenting the world premiere of “Men of Iron and the Golden Spike”, a commissioned symphonic oratorio with lyrics by Wei Su and music by Zhou Long to commemorate the150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Thousands of Chinese laborers contributed their great efforts and lives during the construction of this railroad. That same year, the Yale Chinese Chorus also participated in a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony "Ode to Joy" at New York's Carnegie Hall to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth.

耶鲁华人合唱团 成立于2004年。成员主要来自耶鲁大学的华人学生学者教职工、大纽黑文地区的公司员工、以及他们的亲属们。过去十几年间，合唱团主办，参与和制作了多次在耶鲁、社区、全国甚至国际范围的合唱与艺术活动，以及到社区和老人院进行慰问演出。演唱了大量中外合唱作品。除了演唱之外，我们还不定期教授音乐理论和视唱练耳。 耶鲁华人合唱团是大型叙事合唱《岁月甘泉》的中坚力量。参加了过去8年中在世界各地的17场演出，其中包括纽约卡内基音乐厅，林肯中心，华盛顿斯特莱斯莫音乐中心，芝加哥交响乐厅，悉尼歌剧院，法兰克福，旧金山，以及广州大剧院和上海东方艺术中心等著名音乐场所。在过去两年间，作为纽约当代中国音乐节合唱团的主要成员，参与了在纽约卡内基的纪念150年前华工修建太平洋铁路的大型交响清唱剧《铁汉金钉》的演出。他们还参与了纪念贝多芬诞辰250周年的贝多芬第九交响乐《欢乐颂》的演出。 耶鲁华人合唱团欢迎喜欢合唱的朋友参加我们的团队。
