Descriptions
GRMD 5001 Research
Seminar I
These are seminars for teachers and scholars to
introduce their research interest and recent development in
specialized areas of Geography and Resource management, in
order to facilitate research students to identity interesting
and important research areas. Research students are also required
to report findings of their literature review.
GRMD 5002 Research
Seminar II
These are seminars for research students to present
research plan and to receive comments from teachers and other
research students. Additional talks will also be given by
invited scholars to exchange research findings.
GRMD 5100 Advanced
Geographical Methodology
This course introduces and reviews some of the
main methodologies in conducting geographical research. It
covers bibliographic research, field investigation, thesis
preparation and other practical concerns. Special ways of
approaching certain subfields of geography will also be introduced
and reviewed. New geographical techniques such as geographical
information systmes, remote sensing, intelligent spatial decision
systems, and analysis of uncertainty and their role in geographical
research will be examined.
GRMD 5110 Statistical
Applications in Geography
This course is an introduction to statistical methods
in geographic research. The goal of this course is to provide
a practical understanding of the application of statistical
analysis to geographic problem solving. Emphasis is placed
on the application of appropriate methods to analyze geographic
data, the appropriate procedures for research design, and
the interpretation of research results.
GRMD 6210 Special
Topics in Geography of Pacific Asia
This course reviews important literature on geographical
issues in the Pacific Asia region, evaluating source materials
and discussing techniques for research in China/Asia. Topics
to be discussed emphasize the impact of physical environment
and natural resources on the development of primary, secondary
and tertiary activities in Pacific Asia, as well as the location
and spatial structure of various social and economic activities.
GRMD 6220 Special
Topics in Human Geography
This course reviews important literature on human
geographical issues. Topics are chosen from the major sub-fields
of human geography such as population, economic, urban and
cultural geography and are discussed with emphasis on different
methodologies and implications in the understanding of human
geographical phenomena.
GRMD 6230 Special
Topics in Environmental and Resource Management
This course examines the interrelations between
human activities, natural resources and the environment, as
well as the necessity for a sustainable basis for development.
Special emphasis will be placed on environmental and resource
management options, conflicts, strategies and policy-making.
Case studies will be discussed where appropriate.
GRMD 6240 Special
Topics in Geoinformation Science
This course examines the theory and practice of
the rapid development in geoinformation science. Topics to
be covered include spatial data management using GIS, GIS
implementation and design, virtual geographic environment,
digital image processing techniques in remote sensing, advance
spatial modeling techniques, spatial decision support systems,
digital earth and digital cities and social impact of geoinformation
science.
GRMD 8003 / 8006
