Robotic Surgical System
|
The Robotic Surgical System is necessary to allow further development of the
more sophisticated MIS procedures. It provides an enhancement of human performance, the ability to project surgical expertise to
remote and distant places, and recreation of a patient in a "virtual" form. Robotics takes the surgeon's motions and changes them
into electronic signals which through a computer can be enhanced. The result is performing a procedure with greater accuracy and
precision. It allows performance of the most delicate operations with little risk and post operative discomfort. It is particularly
relevant for complicated heart operations and surgery in newborns and young infants.
|
Surgical Skills Laboratory
|
The Surgical Skills Laboratory is a "wet" laboratory for hands-on training
of surgical skills generally and MIS skills in particular. Unlike a conventional operation theatre, a "wet" laboratory incorporates
ventilation and drainage systems, and this allows cadaver and animal surgery to be carried out. It is instrumental in the training
of doctors in all surgical disciplines, and assists the training of those from other disciplines such as anaesthesia, intensive
care medicine, and gynaecology and obstetrics.
|
Simulated Operating Theatre
|
The Simulated Operating Theatre facilitates demonstration of surgical
procedures on cadavers which is extremely useful for courses on ananotmy and disaster management. Training of nurses and medical
students on operating theatre setup and procedures is also conducted in the room.
|
Microsurgical & Endoscopic Skills Laboratory
|
The Microsurgical & Endoscopic Skills Laboratory allows surgeons to
practice on micro- surgery, skull base surgery, vascular surgery and neurosurgery by using microscopes on tailor-made workstations.
|
Virtual Reality Laboratory
|
The Virtual Reality Laboratory accommodates simulators on general surgery and urology and
a 3-D virtual reality workstation which allows surgeons to work with multi-imaging data for clear understanding of anatomy and improved
treatment training. Operative video library and access to internet are also available in this laboratory.
|
Seminar Room
|
The seminar room is equipped with CCTV linking the room, the operating theatres and
Surgical skills laboratory. This allows the telecasting of live demonstration of operations via the web, and two-way, real-time communication
between the audience and the surgeons during operations. These facilities are crucial not only for training local and Mainland China surgeons
but also for Hong Kong to further enhance its role as an international and regional hub for medical conferences.
