To celebrate its 10th anniversary, S.H. Ho College invited Prof. Pai Hsien-yung, the Wei Lun Professor of Humanities of CUHK and a world renowned writer to talk about his passion for and reflect on Dream of the Red Chamber, one of China's greatest novels on 27 March. The lecture drew a full house of over 600 students, teachers and members of public.

For Prof. Pai, Dream of the Red Chamber is his favorite book of all time. He gave a course on this Chinese classic for over 20 years at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and three semesters at the National Taiwan University. The talk at S.H. Ho College was his first on Dream of the Red Chamber in Hong Kong.

Prof. Pai joined a high table dinner with students of S.H. Ho College and talked about his life on 29 March. College members also took the chance to convey their best wishes to Prof. Pai on his 80th birthday.

In appreciation of the generous donation from Dr. Pak Suet Sin and the Yam Pak Charitable Foundation, and to celebrate Dr. Pak’s 90th birthday, CUHK Library presents the exhibition ‘Unveiling the Splendor of the Flower Princess: An Exhibition from CUHK Library’s Yam Pak Collection in Honour of Dr. Pak Suet Sin’s 90 Years’.

As a renowned Cantonese opera star, Dr. Pak Suet Sin joined the opening ceremony of the exhibition on 27 March and was greeted by CUHK Vice-Chancellor, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, University Librarian, as well as celebrities from the arts.

The exhibition showcases the Library’s invaluable collection of the Sin Fung Ming Troupe, one of the most popular Cantonese opera troupes in Hong Kong. The collection includes libretti, stage stills and other photos, among which the Troupe’s clay-print libretti are the most valuable treasures. Usually, no more than a dozen copies of the clay-print libretti were made and were accessible only to principal performers, the percussionist, and the stage instructor. They are the relics of the playwrights’ original ideation, glinting with their great creativity.

On 26 March, Prof. Joseph Sung, CUHK Vice-Chancellor, led a team of 300 students and teachers of CUHK to join a hiking, which was jointly organised by I·CARE Centre for Whole-person Development and the Physical Education Unit. They went up the Ma On Shan Trail and enjoyed a fresh view of the beautiful CUHK campus from a different angle.

The hikers were encouraged to put on their favorite CUHK T-shirts to indicate their connections. Some put on their department or college T-shirts, some chose to wear the tee or polo shirts that came from events they had participated in on campus before. Prof. Sung wore his CUHK Marathon Team polo shirt, which was the running shirt for his first 10km marathon race.
