The New Asia College of CUHK is honoured and privileged to have had Prof. Yu Ying-shih to deliver its 65th Anniversary Lecture titled ‘New Asia College and Chinese Humanities Studies’. The lecture was transmitted live via video conferencing from the US to Hong Kong, enabling close to 600 staff, students and alumni to benefit from Prof. Yu’s words of wisdom.

The founding of the New Asia College in 1949 was the beginning of Chinese humanities studies in Hong Kong. In his lecture, Prof. Yu began with the humanistic spirit as initiated by Ch’ien Mu and Tang Chun-I and discussed the developments in humanities studies from the May Fourth Movement to modern days.

Prof. Yu believes the study of humanities as propagated by the New Asia College has fostered the growth of the humanistic spirit in Hong Kong, in the Western tradition as well as in those of other parts of the world.

With the beginning of October, the Nobel Prize becomes one of the hottest topics in town. Five years ago, Prof. Charles K. Kao received the Nobel Prize in Physics from Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf at the Concert Hall in Stockholm. When the news was announced on the evening of 6 October 2009, it thrilled all Chinese people and, in particular, the CUHK community.

Known as the ‘Father of Fibre Optics’, Prof. Kao published a paper, back in 1966, which introduced the idea of applying optical fibre to communication. Instead of applying for a patent, he shared the technology with the public to benefit the world. Professor Kao's relationship with CUHK goes back more than 40 years. From 1987 to 1996, he led the University through a period of steady development as Vice-Chancellor. Thanks to his great efforts, Hong Kong Internet Exchange was set up to enhance the development of the internet in the region.

Prof. Kao cares so deeply for the University that he generously donated his Nobel Prize medal and 18 other precious medals to CUHK in 2010. In the eyes of CUHK members, Professor Kao is a very kind man who always wears a broad smile on his face. As you can see, his whistling shows his easy going character that touches everyone’s heart, so let’s meet of our beloved Prof. Kao again in the video.

Lemon Pie from the Basic Medical Sciences Building Snack Bar is well-known as the signature dessert of the campus, and accounts of it can be found on a lot of online blogs and social media. The Fresh lemon taste is an unforgettable memory for a lot of CUHK people. Apart from the lemon pie, you may find other surprising treats like the juicy peach tart, cinnamon flavor apple pie or the creamy chocolate tart. Different treats are ready at 3pm every day, but only while stocks last.

Fresh Toast from Orchid Lodge has attracted much attention recently. Its five levels of toasted bread topped with chocolate sauce can only be finished with a few friends sharing. Homemade Cheese Cake with a strong fruity cheesy flavor is also one of the most popular items here. Another new item on the menu is Hokkaido Milk Pudding. The smooth sensation comes with no artificial flavouring.

Frozen Yogurt for the youngsters is now available at Milano Fresh Cafe in Wu Yee Sun College. The yogurt is freshly made every day with a range of colorful toppings to choose from. A cooling dessert to satisfy your appetite in the hot summer!

“What’s Waffle” is one of the best sellers in Cafe Tolo at Lee Woo Sing College. Waffles are made on demand, topped with chocolate and icing sugar, accompanied by fresh fruit and Movenpick ice cream. Cafe Tolo also provides icy sherbet in summer, as well as chocolate fondue in winter. If you are a dessert lover, you just can’t miss it.
