The I·CARE University Lecture on Civility 2016 was given by Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche, the renowned Tibetan Buddhist meditation master who spoke on the topic ‘The Journey to Joy’ on 21 September. Around 1300 people joined the lecture on campus given by the master, who has been characterized as ‘the happiest man in the world’. The audience, seated at the University Mall, went on a journey of joy in the mind.
Born in the Himalayan border region between Tibet and Nepal, Mingyur Rinpoche is a rising star among the new generation of Tibetan Buddhist masters. In addition to extensive training in the meditative and philosophical traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, Mingyur Rinpoche has also had a lifelong interest in Western science and psychology. He is known for his ability to present his understanding of Tibetan Buddhism using the language of contemporary Western thought. However, 'the happiest man' was not born to happiness. He experienced panic attacks as a child and suffered a lot with this chronic anxiety. In 2011, he began a four-year solitary retreat, which was actually a near-death experience. To Rinpoche, however, these experiences have opened a door to the pursuit of greater happiness in life.
During the lecture, Rinpoche told the audience about the importance and benefits of meditation in his life. He even taught the audience, step by step, how to do meditation. At the end of the lecture, some CUHK students joined him on the Beacon to seek for answers to questions about their studies, relationships and life.
The video of the lecture is now ready at CUTV for review.

As members of the CUHK family, some 600 staff members of the University got together at the Chung Chi Tang on 12 September to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with Prof. Joseph Sung, Vice-Chancellor.
Decorated with colorful lanterns, the venue was filled with booths of entertaining games, snacks and folk crafts for the participants to try out and enjoy. At the same time, staff members from different units of the University staged engaging performances and brought immense joy to the audience. Along with the management team, Prof. Sung sang the song “Moon River” to celebrate the special occasion. He also sang together with Prof. Roger Chung from the Faculty of Medicine who is a member of the music band The Chung Brothers. A flag dance by colleagues from the Estates Management Office won a big round of applause with their powerful and synchronized movements.
The video captured the highlight of the party.

Since 2013, CUHK has been supporting the Hong Kong 'Green Monday' Campaign and encouraging staff and students to go vegetarian when dining on campus on Mondays, with the purpose of reducing carbon emissions and helping save the earth's resources. Now practicing ‘green’ has become much easier with the opening of a vegetarian canteen on campus. CU Vegether, located at the LG floor of the Benjamin Franklin Centre, provides refreshing vegan food choices.
To many people, a vegan diet lacks nutrition, tastes boring and offers limited choices. CU Vegether wants to change this perception by bringing in an exciting vegan experience with a variety of healthy choices. The canteen offers a range of dishes in Chinese, Western and Indian styles. With seasonal vegetables and wheat gluten in tasteful sauces, deep-fried vegan fish fillet made with beans, vegan burger made of beetroot, nuts and cereal, and baked tofu in fresh orange and apple juice, the menu shows that the vegan diet can be fun, delicious and healthy at the same time. One of the most popular dishes is the seasonal vegetable with vegan BBQ pork, which is made of wheat gluten, marinated in syrup and pickled olive leaves for a tasty flavor.
The canteen will not disappoint customers who have a sweet tooth. A variety of dessert choices are available all day, such as the organic red barley and mung bean sweet soup, coralline algae jelly and strawberry layer cake, which will be available very soon. The canteen also provides room temperature drinks in addition to cold ones in order to promote a healthier drinking habit. A booking service is available if you want to enjoy a table of vegan dishes with friends.
