At one point during the Floral Festival of 2012, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Sung said that university life should be romantic. Two years later, while the flowers are blooming with the arrival of spring, the Floral Festival 2015 comes again on campus.

Taiwanese writer Liu Ka-shiang will be on the lawn of United College with Lam Fai, telling stories and giving inspiration from their creative lives. The movie ‘Open Road after Harvest‘ will be screened on 12 March and ‘Murmur of the Hearts’ on 31 March in Sir Run Run Shaw Hall with the directors Chan Ho Lun and Sylvia Chang and actress Angelica Lee joining the discussion sessions that follow.

A learning room at Huen Wing Ming Building with rarely seen orchid cacti will be open till midnight on 20 March for readers to study and read together. Exploration tours to Grass Island, Pyramid Hill and CUHK campus, conducted by experts, will be arranged for students to enjoy a refreshing spring.

To match the theme of this year, you are also encouraged to post, by 16 March, poems and/or musical pieces through I‧CARE Programme Facebook that have not yet been published or performed. You may get a chance to play the music or read out the poem during the finale party of the Floral Festival 2015 on 2 April.

Prof. Yu Kwang Chung, a well-known Chinese poet and former professor of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature is now visiting CUHK to deliver three public lectures under the 28th Ch’ien Mu Lecture in History and Culture series and to celebrate the 65th anniversary of New Asia College. Through the three lectures, which are titled ‘Gong Zi-zhen and Shelley ’ ‘A Comparative Study of Chinese and Western Pastoral Poetry ’ and ‘Poetry Recital, with a Brief Introduction to the Art of Poetry Reading’, Prof. Yu is bringing the audience to a fascinating world of both Chinese and Western poetry.

The first lecture has already been given, on 27 February, and the second was on 1 March.

In the first lecture ‘Gong Zi-zhen and Shelley ’, Prof. Yu introduced two famous poets – Gong Zi-zhen and Percy Bysshe Shelley, and discussed the similarities and differences between their works from the perspective of their background, political attitudes, poetry genre and style. In the second lecture ‘A Comparative Study of Chinese and Western Pastoral Poetry ’, Prof. Yu quoted lines from many poems to reveal the background, development and unique features of Chinese and Western Pastoral Poetry. His profound knowledge and insightful observations on the poetry deeply impressed the audience.

Though Prof. Yu is in his 80s, his pursuits into poetry and literary studies never cease. Let us review the lecture of ‘Gong Zi-zhen and Shelley’ through the video. The Green Mini Movies Competition hosted by the ‘Go Green Community – Jockey Club Carbon Reduction Partnership Scheme’ of CUHK Jockey Club Initiative Gaia has concluded successfully. The candidates, however, are not professional film makers. They are creative students from local primary and secondary schools. The champion of the primary schools category is Tai Po Old Market Public School and the winner of the secondary schools category is CNEC Christian College.

Through their video cameras, the students expressed their understanding of green issues and showed creative thinking on how to lead an eco-friendly life.

At the prize presentation ceremony on 27 February, Prof. FUNG Tung, Associate Vice-President of CUHK, Prof. Gabriel LAU, Director of the Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability of CUHK, Ms Janis CHAN, Executive Director of Green Monday, and Ms Nicole WONG, Director of Corporate Affairs of the World Wide Fund For Nature Hong Kong, presented the awards to the winning students. The event was warmly received by over 120 students and teachers from 27 schools.
