The twenty-second of May was named as Shiu-Ying Hu Day to commemorate Prof. Hu Shiu-ying, a world renowned botanist, who passed away on 22 May, 2012.
In 1968, Prof. Hu joined CUHK as a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Biology of Chung Chi College and continued her research work in the diversity of Hong Kong vegetation. During her time at the University, she helped to set up the first herbarium at CUHK for teaching and research. Over the years, Prof. Hu collected over 30,000 specimens. She was affectionately known to her colleagues as a walking encyclopedia on botany. She once said, ‘The motivation for my research is to go into nature and unify with it.’
Born in the last few years of the Qing Dynasty, Prof. Hu witnessed major changes in China and the world. Regardless of the ups and downs of her time, she had so much joy out of her life that she said, ‘When I am fully engaged with nature, there is no sorrow, but only joy.’
To celebrate Shiu-Ying Hu Day, a video of Prof. Hu’s story was made as one of the ‘CU50 • The People’ video series. Let’s watch the video of Prof. Hu’s inspiring life story and appreciate her purity of heart towards nature and research.
