Since 2013, CUHK has been supporting the Hong Kong 'Green Monday' Campaign and encouraging staff and students to go vegetarian when dining on campus on Mondays, with the purpose of reducing carbon emissions and helping save the earth's resources. Now practicing ‘green’ has become much easier with the opening of a vegetarian canteen on campus. CU Vegether, located at the LG floor of the Benjamin Franklin Centre, provides refreshing vegan food choices.
To many people, a vegan diet lacks nutrition, tastes boring and offers limited choices. CU Vegether wants to change this perception by bringing in an exciting vegan experience with a variety of healthy choices. The canteen offers a range of dishes in Chinese, Western and Indian styles. With seasonal vegetables and wheat gluten in tasteful sauces, deep-fried vegan fish fillet made with beans, vegan burger made of beetroot, nuts and cereal, and baked tofu in fresh orange and apple juice, the menu shows that the vegan diet can be fun, delicious and healthy at the same time. One of the most popular dishes is the seasonal vegetable with vegan BBQ pork, which is made of wheat gluten, marinated in syrup and pickled olive leaves for a tasty flavor.
The canteen will not disappoint customers who have a sweet tooth. A variety of dessert choices are available all day, such as the organic red barley and mung bean sweet soup, coralline algae jelly and strawberry layer cake, which will be available very soon. The canteen also provides room temperature drinks in addition to cold ones in order to promote a healthier drinking habit. A booking service is available if you want to enjoy a table of vegan dishes with friends.
