CU50 • The People —Jao Tsung-I

Prof. the Honourable Jao Tsung-I, GBM, Wei Lun Honorary Professor of Fine Arts at CUHK is a world renowned sinologist, who has made outstanding achievements in many fields, including China studies, Oriental studies, arts and culture. Professor Jao commands a vast academic repertoire covering Dunhuang studies, oracular bone inscriptions, historiography, bibliography, the study of chu ci, archaeology, epigraphy, regional folklore studies, historical musicology, and other fields.

Prof. Jao has a long relationship with CUHK. In 1952, he was invited to teach in New Asia College, and then served as the Chairman of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature from 1973 to 1978. He was conferred a Doctor of Literature, honoris causa, by CUHK in 2003. Over the years, Prof. Jao has generously donated a significant quantity of books, paintings and calligraphic works to the University, and provided invaluable advice on promoting academic development at CUHK.

“A Symphony of Academics and Art” is a motto for Prof. Jao which has also become his appellation. In addition to his academic achievement, Prof. Jao is also an artist of the first rank. He is a most competent poet, calligrapher, painter, and qin performer.

Vice-Chancellor Wishes Everyone a Happy
Mid-Autumn Festival

To celebrate the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival, over 500 staff of the University got together at the Chung Chi Tang on 23 September to spend a cheerful and relaxing evening with the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joseph Sung.

Along with the management team, Prof. Sung sang a song on the stage. He also joined with a group of colleagues playing a piece of Chinese traditional music to celebrate the festival. Other colleagues from different units also staged engaging performances and brought immense joy to the audience.

The venue was decorated with colorful lanterns. Interesting game booths and festive snacks were also provided for the audience to enjoy.Let’s experience the happy moment of the evening through the photos. We wish everyone a happy Mid-Autumn Festival.

Come and Join CUHK Marathon Team

Registration for the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2016 starts today! After successful registration, CUHK runners can join the CUHK Marathon Team and run together with other CUHK members on 17 January, 2016.

CUHK Marathon Team members will be able to enjoy exclusive benefits including: a CUHK running tee-shirt or singlet, participation in marathon seminars and training by the University, on-field medical support by CUHK Sports Medicine Team on the race day, support from CUHK cheerers along the racing routes, a souvenir from the CUHK booth located at the finishing area and photos to be taken along the racing routes and at the CUHK booth. Runners with outstanding results will also be presented with trophies from the University.

Since 2013, CUHK has formed its own marathon team in which over 6,000 runners and 1,000 cheerers have participated over the years. CUHK won the “Most Supportive Group Award” presented by the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon for three consecutive years and came in second place in 2015! The University is looking forward to dispatching a record-breaking CUHK Marathon Team again this year.All CUHK students, staff and alumni are welcome to join. Each CUHK member can also invite up to 3 relatives and friends to join the CUHK Marathon Team.

Step 1: Register as a runner in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon 2016
