Applicable to students admitted in 2020-21

Major Programme Requirement

Students are required to complete a minimum of 63 units of courses as follows:

(1)	Faculty Package:  LING1000# and any two courses from ANTH1020, ARTS1003, BMBL1001, CHES1100, CHLL1900 or 1902, CUMT1000, CURE1000, 1110, ENGE1000, FAAS1900, HIST1000, JASP1090, MUSC1000, PHIL1110, THEO1000, TRAN1000	9
(2)	Required Courses: (a) LING1001# or 1002# [a] (b) LING1003#, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 4000, 4001	3 27
(3)	Elective Courses  (a) Six courses from 3 areas, with at least one course from each area (excluding LING3405 and 3406) (b) Language courses: 6 units of language courses (from one to two languages) to enhance students’ exposure to language(s) other than Chinese (Cantonese/Putonghua) and English.	18 6

Explanatory Note:

1. LING courses at 2000 and above level as well as those labeled as # will be included in the calculation of Major GPA for honours classification.
2. Students may be required to participate in activities such as field trips and study tours that foster their learning of linguistics.
3. Students whose first language is not Chinese may take Cantonese and Putonghua as language courses for 3(b).
4. A Linguistics Major student who pursues a second Major in Chinese Language and Literature can be exempted from taking CHLL3162, 4161 and 4110 by taking LING1002, 3108 and 4401 respectively. Units earned can be counted towards both Major Programmes.
5. A Linguistics Major student who pursues a second Major in Psychology can be exempted from taking PSYC3430 by taking LING3202. Units earned can be counted towards both Major Programmes.
6. A Linguistics Major student who pursues a second Major in Translation can be exempted from taking TRAN2610 by taking LING3401. Units earned can be counted towards both Major Programmes.

[a] The course not taken to fulfill requirement 2(a) may be taken as an elective course.

Major Programme Requirement (for Associate Degree or Higher Diploma holders admitted to senior-year places)

Students are required to complete a minimum of 54 units of courses as follows:

(1)	Faculty Package:  LING1000	3
(2)	Required Courses: (a) LING1001 or 1002 [a] (b) LING1003, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 4000, 4001	3 27
(3)	Elective Courses  (a) Five courses from 3 areas, with at least one course from each area (excluding LING3405 and 3406) (b) Language courses: 6 units of language courses (from one to two languages) to enhance students’ exposure to language(s) other than Chinese (Cantonese/Putonghua) and English.	15 6
	Total:	54
