Admissions

1. What is the admission quota in 2020 entry?

The admission quota is 15 for the 4-year curriculum. (This includes JUPAS, non-JUPAS and International students, the ratio may vary depending on the academic performance of students this year.)

2. When will the interviews be held in 2020?

The first round interview will be held in June while the second round individual interview will be held after the release of HKDSE results in July. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend the interview via email or by phone call.

3. What are the criteria for HKDSE candidate to be shortlisted for admission interview in 2020?

Band A candidates who have chosen one or more of the CUHK business programmes will be invited for the First Round Interview. Candidates' interview performance and results will be shared amongst programmes.

In order to be shortlisted for the Second Round Interview, students have to meet the minimum requirements (Level 4 in Chinese Language, Level 5 in English Language, Level 3 in Maths, Liberal Studies & Best 2 Elective Subjects). 4. What format will the interviews take?

The interviews will be conducted in both English and Cantonese. The format may vary from year to year.

5. What is the weight of interviews?

The final decision to accept a student is based mainly on academic results and assessment at the interviews.

6. Did students need to study Economics or Accounting in Secondary School?

No.

7. Will students have a better chance of being admitted to GLOBE if they have studied Economics or Accounting for HKDSE?

No. Chances for Arts, Science and Business students are equal.

8. Should non-JUPAS applicants put GBS as their first choice in order to be considered?

9. What is the minimum requirement for IB students?

The minimum requirement for admitted to GBS is about 43 for IB students. The score varies year to year.

10. What is the JUPAS admission formula?

11. Can current Year 1 CUHK students apply for GBS?

Yes, subject to quota availability. To be shortlisted for an interview, students should have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or above. Both academic performance and interview performance will be considered in the selection process. In addition, they should have obtained the minimum TOEFL/ IELTS score. Successful applicants will be transferred to GBS after the completion of their first year of study.

12. Do JUPAS applicants taking HKDSE need to have TOEFL/IELTS?

Yes. They are required to have obtained a minimum TOEFL (internet) score of 100, or an IELTS score of 7.0 or above, before the interview.

13. If students have not taken TOEFL/IELTS yet, can they still apply?

Yes. Applicants are required to have their TOEFL/IELTS score ready by the time they attend the interview.

14. Does a higher TOEFL/ IELTS score help?

Meeting the minimum requirement is fine enough.

15. If a student fails to obtain Level 5 in HKDSE English Language, can he/she sit for TOEFL again? If one’s TOEFL/IELTS score is high enough, will he/she be considered as having met the entrance requirements?

No. Students should meet both the requirements of HKDSE English Language, and TOEFL/IELTS.

16. Will SAT results be considered if the student didn't take TOEFL/IELTS?

17. Does it help for admission if I know an additional foreign language, such as Japanese?

Curriculum

1. How many units are needed to complete the programme by students with HKDSE results?

+

Students admitted on the strength of their HKDSE results (i.e. under the 4-year curriculum) shall complete at least 123 units of courses before graduation.

2. What will students admitted with the strength of their HKDSE results study in their first year at CUHK?

Faculty package of business foundation courses, language courses, general education, physical education and elective courses.

3. Can students take any minor programmes or double majors?

Yes.

4. Do Global Business Studies students need to choose a concentration area?

No. Global Business Studies is their concentration area. Yet, students can develop a second concentration. (e.g. Finance, Human Resource Management, General Business and Marketing).

5. Any summer internships? When?

GBS students may work as interns during the summer holiday. There are many local internship opportunities, and some students even worked outside Hong Kong in cities such as New York, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney.

1. Will the Faculty arrange hostels for students studying in Denmark and the US?

Yes. Hostels will be arranged by the host institutions.

2. How much are the tuition fees and estimated living costs for the 4-year curriculum for HKDSE students?

The current tuition fee for CUHK is HK$42,100 per year. The hostel and living costs in Hong Kong are estimated at HK$4,000 per month. The living costs in Denmark and the US, including airfares, food, hostel fee, local transportation and study trips, totals HK$155,000 approximately. Therefore, the total cost is about HK$467,400 (HK$42,100x4 + 4,000x12x3 + 155,000) for the 4-year curriculum.

3. The HK$155,000 is for one year or four years?

It is the total estimated expenses for studying in Denmark and the US for two semesters, including airfares, living, accommodation, local transportation and study trips.

4. The three Business Schools have different education systems in their local community. How can the standard of students be guaranteed?

UNC only admits students with Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.5 or above (4 point scale) to GLOBE. CBS only selects 18 out of 100 International Business major students, which has the highest admission score, to GLOBE. Therefore, it is beyond question that students admitted to GLOBE are of top quality.

5. Will financial aid be granted to students in need?

Yes. There are different forms of scholarships & financial aids offered by the University, Faculty, Colleges and other institutions.

CUHK offers admission scholarships to both local and non-local new undergraduate students on the basis of their outstanding academic or non-academic performance. The value of each Admission Scholarship ranges from HK$5,000 to a full-tuition coverage. Some of the Admission Scholarships will also include an allowance of up to HK$45,000 per year. Many of the Admission Scholarships are renewable for the normative period of study subject to satisfactory academic progress.

In addition, financial assistance in the form of a loan will be provided on a need basis to cover all expenses.
