------------------

Twenty-two songs set to music. At the time of first publication, each of the editors was based at the then Singapore Teachers’ Training College. Francis Mace was a Lecturer in Music, Verner Bickley was Head of the Department of English. In the brief ‘Preface’ they declare that the songs will be useful for class singing lessons at all levels in the Primary School. Most of the melodies are adapted from traditional music: Malay, Egyptian, Indonesian, Chinese, Tamil, Hindustani. In most cases, words and music have been written or adapted by the editors. “A New Malayan Song Book” was first published in 1960.

A New Malayan Song Book is among the earliest of the many educational texts edited or co-edited, authored or co-authored by Dr Verner Courtenay Bickley, MBE (1926-2025). The book appeared early in his full and varied career as an educationist, during which he led international education projects in Singapore, Burma, Indonesia, Japan, Hawai’i, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong. This second edition contains his brief biography.
