Prof. Zhao’s research is primarily on the control and optimization of networked systems, e.g., power systems. His current projects mainly focus on optimizing power network topology, accelerating nonlinear optimization in large networks, and developing machine-learning methods for power system control. From 2016 to 2019, he was with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (now known as the National Laboratory of the Rockies), Colorado, US.
