A journey of heritage in Hong Kong and Macao for Stanford students

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rocky S. Tuan (middle) hosts a dinner for the BOSP students.
With the pandemic behind us now, CUHK is now able to deliver a more immersive and comprehensive experience to the third cohort of 22 Stanford University (Stanford) students under the Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) during the first term of this year.
The BOSP students did not only enroll in courses spanning various disciplines in Arts and Social Science, but also participated in a BOSP-exclusive mandatory course ‘Investigating Hong Kong Through Multidisciplinary Lens’. The course, taught by Prof. Suk-ying Wong from the Department of Sociology, featured guest speakers to examine the social and cultural dynamics of contemporary Hong Kong. Besides, this is the first year where CUHK hosted a Stanford faculty as a Faculty in Residence for BOSP, who is Prof. Charles Eesley and he taught one course on ‘Fintech and Entrepreneurship in China’.
To provide a good understanding of the city, the BOSP students were offered a series of out-of-classroom activities organised by the Office of Academic Links, including an outreach visit to the homeless, a fieldwork trip in Ping Shan village in Yuen Long to study Hong Kong’s cultural heritage, and a spiritual practice in Tsz Shan Monastery. The students also participated in other activities organised by other CUHK units and the Stanford alumni association in Hong Kong to further enrich their experiences on and off campus.

With the lifting of the travel restrictions, the BOSP students had the opportunity to join a 2-day excursion to Macao. Prof. Stuart McManus from the Department of History led the students on the tour, offering narratives about the cultures and historical sites in Macao.

BOSP offers the opportunity for Stanford students to study away for a quarter or a semester in 12 global locations. CUHK is proud to collaborate with Stanford in offering this academic partnership programme in Hong Kong.
