Professor CHIU has made significant contributions to the development of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis. Recently, she has been investigating the detection of cancer-derived DNA in human plasma with an aim to develop non-invasive blood tests for cancer detection.

Professor LO has successfully delineated the early events in NPC tumourigenesis and determined multiple recurrent genetic and epigenetic abnormalities in this EBV-associated cancer. Recently, he has systematically characterised the NPC genome by next-generation sequencing approaches.

Professor LO discovered the presence of cell-free fetal DNA in maternal plasma in 1997 and has since then been pioneering non-invasive prenatal diagnosis using this technology.

Professor MA’s research group was the first to identify a genetic variant near the PAX4 gene as a novel predictor of type 2 diabetes in Chinese and other Asian populations. He is currently leading a multidisciplinary project team to identify novel molecular markers for diabetic complications, funded by the Theme-based research scheme.

Professor TO’s research team reported the genomic landscape of the largest cohort of micro-dissected EBV-positive NPC as published to date by performing whole-exome sequencing. It is also the first published systematic study to unravel the whole genome of NPC.

Professor WONG’s research focuses on elucidating the molecular carcinogenesis of HCC and etiology-associated HCC pathogenesis, namely HBV infection and NASH. Her group has previously studied the cytogenetic aberrations of HCC and defined a number of vital genomic loci.

Professor YU’s novel research activities include detection of molecular alterations in GI carcinogenesis, and discovery of biomarkers for early detection, prognosis prediction and effective treatment. She has obtained 15 research-related prizes/ awards over the years.

Professor NG’s research interest is to unveil the causes of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Her research group has focused on how environmental factors lead to the disease. And their revelations are now being used to developed targeted therapies for IBD.

Professor Ling QIN

Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology

Professor QIN has devoted significant efforts to the development of biodegradable metals for clinical applications in orthopaedics. His team has developed a biodegradable magnesium implants, reducing the risk of infection or the need for removal. Further experimental work will be carried in hopes of developing a desirable treatment for major orthopaedic problems.
