CPII Delivers Live AI Subtitle Support for the Installation Ceremony of Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming as the Ninth Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK

Hong Kong, May 21, 2025 – The Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence (CPII) proudly supported the ceremony installing Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming as the ninth Vice-Chancellor and President of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on 20 May, 2025. Utilizing its advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, CPII delivered live subtitles and translations, enhancing the event experience for audiences. More than 700 attendees, including CUHK staff, students, alumni, and representatives from academic institutions in mainland China and other countries, witnessed this important event.
The CPII Intelligent Live Subtitle System enhanced this historic moment at CUHK by seamlessly transcribing the spoken content of the event and translating it between Chinese and English in real time. Through CPII’s technology, diverse language audiences could follow the ceremony in real time, regardless of language barriers. This exemplifies the Centre’s contribution to fostering inclusive communication and understanding across diverse audiences.

The 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

[Hong Kong, April 13, 2025] – The Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence (CPII) is pleased to announce that two of our innovative projects were awarded Bronze Medals at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, held from April 9-13, 2025. This event provided us with a valuable platform to showcase our dedication to advanced manufacturing and artificial intelligence, alongside over 1,050 entries from 38 countries. From Speech to Summary Highlights in Real-Time: Hong Kong’s First AI-powered Media Assistant Powers Financial Secretary’s Budget Speech for Second Consecutive Year

[Hong Kong, 26 February 2025] – For the second consecutive year, the Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence (CPII), in collaboration with Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK), has revolutionized the live broadcast of the Financial Secretary’s Budget Speech using cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI). Powered by CPII’s Real-Time Speech-to-Summary Meeting Assistant, this innovative AI technology delivers real-time transcription, translation, and rolling summaries in textual form – setting a new benchmark for live media broadcasting in Hong Kong.

This groundbreaking, multi-lingual AI solution can transform spoken words into text and concise, AI-generated summaries displayed during RTHK 32’s live broadcast which can be further summarized. As the first-of-its-kind in Hong Kong, this AI-powered assistant is a breakthrough in real-time speech-to-text and summarization technology, making live broadcasts more accessible and informative for all walks of life in Hong Kong.

American Delegates Visit

CPII was delighted to welcome approximately 40 American delegates to our office at Hong Kong Science Park on 2 December, 2024. The visit aimed to explore collaboration opportunities and share insights on innovative practices in business development and implementation. This event sought to strengthen ties between the global community and Hong Kong, focusing on key areas such as technology, research and sustainable development. Delegates engaged in discussions with our Centre Director, Professor Helen Meng, and our research staff, exchanging ideas on best practices and strategies for addressing global challenges.

During the visit, the delegation toured CPII’s facilities and laboratories, highlighting ongoing projects and initiatives. Our research teams showcased their recent outcomes, including the CPII Meeting Assistant, CPII ChatDoc Master, and AI-Enhanced Weaving-Based Freeform Sensing Interfaces.

Professor Meng expressed gratitude for the visit, stating, “We are honored to host this distinguished group. Together, we can drive positive change and create impactful solutions for the future.”

The visit concluded with a networking session, allowing delegates to connect with CPII staff and discuss future collaborative efforts.

Greater Bay Area Science Forum 2024: Sub-forum on International Organizations and Bay Areas Dialogue

CPII is pleased to announce that our Centre Director, Prof. Helen Meng, had the honor of participating as a speaker in the “Greater Bay Area Science Forum 2024: Sub-forum on International Organizations and Bay Areas Dialogue,” co-hosted by the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Alliance of National and International Science Organizations for Belt and Road Regions successfully held on November 12, 2024.

During the forum, Prof. Helen Meng shared her recent innovative projects and the features of the CPII Speech to Summary Meeting Assistant. The forum attracted approximately 300 representatives from different countries. We extend our congratulations on the success of the forum.

The 14th International Symposium on Chinese Spoken Language Processing (ISCSLP 2024)

CPII is pleased to participate and to sponsor the 14th International Symposium on Chinese Spoken Language Processing (ISCSLP 2024) held in Beijing on 7-10 Nov 2024, showcasing our latest progress in theoretical and technological aspects of Chinese spoken language processing.

International Symposium on Chinese Spoken Language Processing (ISCSLP) is the flagship conference of SIGCSLP. It is a biennial conference for scientists, researchers and practitioners to report and discuss the latest progress in all theoretical and technological aspects of Chinese spoken language processing. It is scheduled to take turns running the event in four Chinese-spoken regions, namely Singapore, Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

By leveraging cutting-edge AI research and development, CPII has seamlessly applied advanced technologies, including customizable speech recognition, machine translation, automatic error correction, and key point extraction, into real-time broadcasting. This initiative underscores CPII’s commitment to utilizing innovative AI solutions for societal benefit while promoting technological progress and enhancing workflow productivity.

Key features of CPII’s AI technologies include:

Cutomizable speech recognition engine supporting dynamic hotwords update such as rare words or names and real-time transcription for Cantonese, English, and Mandarin, as well as code-switching across these three languages, ensuring seamless communication.
Cantonese-to-English translation for automatic translation of transcribed Cantonese speech into English text, facilitating broader accessibility and understanding for diverse audiences.
Automatic Error Correction and Punctuation Insertion to automatically correct speech recognition errors and insert punctuation into speech transcripts, enhancing the readability and clarity of the content.
Generative AI Summarization to generate concise summaries highlighting key facts and insights from the Policy Address Speech.
During the live broadcast, CPII’s Speech-to-Summary Meeting Assistant provided real-time automated recognition, translation and summarization. The speech recognition engine instantly transcribes the spoken audio, while generative AI distills the transcripts into concise bullet-point highlights every minute. This significantly enhances the traditional, laborious processes of human note-taking and summarization. The AI-generated summaries are displayed as rolling bullet points during RTHK 32’s live-streamed broadcasts, offering viewers immediate access to essential information and enhancing their understanding of the Policy Address.

CUHK Innovation & Entrepreneurship Exhibition

Reception for I&T Awards 2024

We are thrilled to announce that our Chief Engineer and Solution Lead, Dr. Philip Liu has been invited to attend the Reception for I&T Awards 2024 organized by the Innovation and Technology Commission on 15 July 2024 on behalf of our Centre Director, Professor Meng.

Under the theme of “Hong Kong’s Innovation and Technology Achievements Shine in International Arena”, over 300 representatives from the local I&T sector were gathered and were commended for their outstanding research and development achievements in the field of Innovation and Technology on the Mainland and overseas. Professor Meng and Dr Philip Liu were awarded a gold medal and a silver medal at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva (IEIG). The awards and the reception are a testament and recognition to their remarkable contributions to the I&T industry.
