——

Every day in Hong Kong, we encounter domestic helpers on the streets, in parks, and at wet markets. Each of these helpers has a unique story to share from their home country. Over 300,000 foreign domestic helpers tackle their employers’ household chores daily, with almost non-stop working hours, taking on caregiving responsibilities for families in Hong Kong. Despite having only one day off per week, some workers choose to spend their free time collecting waste in the hills and cleaning the beaches of Hong Kong with their environmental commitment.

When it comes to plastic reduction, domestic workers are key stakeholders as well. They purchase and prepare food daily, manage waste disposal in their employers’ homes, segregate recyclables, and utilize reusable tableware and containers for their weekly gatherings. What are their perspectives on plastic use, and how do they make efforts to minimize its impact in their daily lives?

Following the beach clean-up on Lamma Island and the design thinking workshop, the “Plastic-free together” project now moves to the “fieldwork”. On January 28th and February 4th, students will visit Central to engage in cross-cultural dialogue with domestic helpers through film screenings and questionnaire interviews. Through screening videos depicting the cross-cultural journey of plastic waste in the Philippines and India, students and domestic helpers will collectively explore the impact of plastics in different places. Students will then conduct questionnaire interviews and dialogues with the helpers to understand their knowledge and behaviours related to plastic use: when do they most commonly use plastic bags? What is their idea of the forthcoming MSW Charging scheme? What challenges do we all face in reducing plastic use?

Through two days of research, we aim to uncover the cross-cultural aspects of plastic waste and embark on a collective exploration of environmental awareness and social change.
