Cultural connections: A world of friendships

CUHK welcomed about 480 incoming exchange students in the first term of this year. With support from the Office of Academic Links, these students quickly adapted to their new environment and participated in activities designed to immerse themselves in local culture and the student community. Many of them had never visited Hong Kong before, but the exchange programme far exceeded their expectations, enriching their experiences in remarkable ways.

Ms. Georgia May Tattersall from the University of Otago in New Zealand studies Chinese language and law. She noted that CUHK is ideally situated for honing her Chinese language skills. Engaging in lively discussions with locals about the cultural differences between New Zealand and China has opened her eyes to new perspectives.

Ms. Alicja Julia Mackowiak from Tilburg University in the Netherlands was pleasantly surprised by the variety of courses CUHK offers to incoming students. She also cherished the opportunity to connect with fellow students from around the globe and local peers. Alicija has forged wonderful friendships both at the College and in her classes, making her stay even more enjoyable and helping her feel right at home.

Ms. Nadine Aeschlimann from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland initially faced a culinary challenge as a vegetarian in Hong Kong, but she quickly developed a fondness for Cheung Fan (rice noodle rolls) and became delightfully addicted to traditional milk tea. Exploring Hong Kong’s unique culinary scene has become one of her favourite adventures in the city.
