The continuous growth of human activities has led to a significant increase in the emissions of greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide. The issue of carbon emissions has raised emerging concerns about global climate change, and the world is now faced with the challenge of lowering carbon emissions without compromising our quality of life. For many, chemistry is often associated with industries that produce greenhouse gases and other pollutants. However, we believe that chemistry is the key to transforming the global chemical industry towards a low-carbon society.
In this programme, students will explore the role of chemistry in reducing carbon emissions. In the morning, students will attend lectures on theories for developing low-carbon technologies such as alternative energy and catalysis. Students will also learn about innovative methods for converting carbon emissions into useful products. Equipped with the scientific knowledge from the lectures, students will make use of what they have learnt to perform exciting experiments in the afternoon. The experiments include to generate electricity using eco-friendly methods, to conduct chemical degradation using visible light, and to analyse low-carbon products using advanced instruments.
Learning should not be confined to classrooms. In addition to STEM education, students are going to have a glimpse into our chemistry curriculum and CUHK. Admission talk, laboratory tour, campus tour and CUHK treasure hunt will be arranged for students to make the programme more fruitful and enjoyable.
