我遲到現在才寫出悼文，請不要覺得奇怪，因為我是一個從來比人遲的人，恰恰是這樣帶來我與劉教授的緣份。 我比人遲進醫學院，比人遲考執照試，也比人遲考到院士。人生中可能是最重要的考試，都剛好遇上了劉教授作為當時的主考官。他以真誠與温暖，體貼所有與他交集過的人。尤其對性格內向的考生，總是特別體諒照顧。 而之後在醫務委員會的註冊醫生名錄裏，劉教授的名字總是在我名字的前一位，這又是另一種緣份。 能認識劉教授，可能是我修了幾輩子的福，才得來的緣份。只希望我對社會所作的回饋，能比他期望的還要多。 他的寬廣包容，遠超我所期待。他其實是最懂育人的人。他給我，身為一個考生能擁有的，最大支持與尊重。看到一個一生為育人而努力的美麗生命，希望他在天上，能耐心地等待，等待這個世界成為一個再沒有疾病或傷痛的地方。 我們不能選擇如何死亡，但是我們可以選擇如何過這一生。 劉教授竭盡所能，奉獻所學，給了他熱愛的香港，熱愛的世界。我相信他沒有遺憾，是老天體恤他的辛苦，讓他先休息了。 我希望對劉教授的家人說，感激他們對他的深情相伴，陪伴他走過人生最燦爛的歲月。這是永生美麗的回憶。

It is with great sadness that I write this memory of a wonderful friend. I first met Joseph when I joined Professor G B Ong’s unit in 1978/1979. We immediately became close colleagues and friends. I first met Joseph when I joined Professor G B Ong’s unit in 1978/1979.
We immediately became close colleagues and friends. Afterwards we kept close contact and met ad conferences around the world.
Joseph was a skilled surgeon, brilliant teacher, astute researcher, superb editor and great friend.
When I was appointed Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Surgery one of the first things I did was make Joseph an editor and soon after a senior editor. He was erudite & efficient in these role and when the time came for me to step down,I immediately suggested Joseph to follow my as Editor in Chief.He was brilliant in this role and worked tirelessly to improve the journal with the result it became on of the top five surgical journals in the world with an impact factor of over 12. Despite having to travel to London he never failed to be present at the AGM except during the COVID 19 Pandemic.
He will be sorely missed by surgeons all over the world and especially by me. May he RIP.... Collapse

In 1989, Professor Lau lectured me on surgical drains and jaundice when I was a final year medical student. I was greatly inspired, and was impressed by how he made complicated concepts simple and easily understandable. In the same year, I became intern of his team. I had the privilege of presenting cases to Prof during morning round at 7:45 nearly everyday, for 6 months. I was nervous and often shivered, yet I learned a great deal. My confidence heightened whenever I saw Prof's nodding and pleasant, encouraging smile after the round. Not only Prof taught me the art and craft of surgery, but he also showed me, by setting an example, how a successful surgeon began his day.
For the following 7 years, I was again very privileged because I became his resident. My surgical knowledge grew immensely as I stood next to Prof during this period, both in the ward and in the theatre. I still remember vividly the occasion when Prof took me through an open cholecystectomy (my first cholecystectomy). When I tried o tie the cystic duct in continuity, I left no room for Prof to divide in between. Naturally I felt scared and embarrassed, until Prof smiled and said: " Hah, CC, you look smarter than this". I remember every comforting and encouraging word from Professor Lau.
In 1993, I did research work in library (no internet yet) and wrote up my first research article. I gave to Prof at 5:30p after the evening round. I was expecting to receive his reply in a week or two, given Prof's heavy commitments and extremely busy schedule. The fact was, Prof returned to me the draft, fully amended (including references), revised and in fact re-written with added paragraphs, the next day at 7:45 before morning round.
This was not the end of the story. Prof did the same for the dozen of papers I gave him in the subsequent years.
And no surgical trainees could forget Prof's revision tutorials (more like rehearsal/mock tutorials) for fellowship exams, during which Prof pointed out our weakness individually as well as helped consolidate what we've learned. Prof was such a great coach. He is never tired of sharing his knowledge and skill.
After I left Prof and became senior resident and consultant at another hospital, I still sought his invaluable advice from time to time. I remember on one occasion, I encountered a difficult case with post-cholecystectomy liver hematoma, and I called Prof for opinion at theatre. Instead of instructing me what and what not to do, Prof came personally to assist me at operation. I was so thankful to him.
For all these reasons, I am so privileged and proud to be called "Professor Lau's boy". Once in a while, my students or juniors told me I spoke like Prof during teaching (in fact, no comparison at all); I took that as the greatest compliment in life.
My heart sank when I heard the kind man who paved my surgical career ( and many other surgeons too) had left us indefinitely. No longer can I send him Christmas cards; not any more. My deepest condolences to Prof's family. Like many other students and surgeons who were fortunate enough to be taught by him, I wound pay tribute to Prof by doing what I do best for the community in the medical profession.

劉允怡教授是我的救命恩人，亦是我的好朋友。1994 年，我在瑪麗醫院被確診，患有晚期原發性肝癌 (Hepatocellular Carcinoma - HCC) 而且因為左右肝葉都有腫瘤，加上癌細胞已經擴散至整個肝臟，因此無法做切除手術。此外，化療、電療或冷凍治療均不適合。簡單而言，群醫束手無策，我只能等待死神降臨。 後來，有幸經朋友介紹，找到中文大學的劉允怡教授。我第一次和他見面，感覺他為人親切和樸實。他當時看了我的檢驗報告之後，對我說，他確定我已得了原發性肝癌，但不肯定我是一個腫瘤，還是兩個腫瘤？至於整個肝的癌細胞，應該是再生細胞。最後，他安排了我再做一次超聲波檢查。在確定我只有一個腫瘤後的第二天，他安排了我做手術，親自操刀，把我的肝臟腫瘤切除，使我重獲新生。因此，我這條命是欠他的。 自此，我們成為好朋友。雖然我們不是經常見面，但是互相關懷，偶爾通通訊息問候。兩年前他還送了我一本他的個人專輯，介紹他在國內不同醫學院講課，努力推動我國在治療肝癌方面的發展，造福人類。 他為人低調，兩袖清風，不求名，不求利，只是默默地付出和貢獻。此外，他為人公正不阿，因此成為醫管會主席，實在深慶得人。 劉教授樸實無華，待人親切和關心。真是仁心仁術。突然接到他離世的消息，深感悲痛和不捨。深信他已經回到天家，主懷安息。求天父繼續保守、看顧和安慰他的家人。 他雖然離我們而去，但他永遠活在我們心中。哲人其萎，永垂不朽！ 🙏🙏🙏 查錫我

My dearest friend Professor Joseph LAU Wan Yee was an outstanding surgeon with a very distinguished national and international reputation. He was well respected among his peers and loved by his patients. I was very privileged to have worked with him as he always gave me excellent advice with humour. Moreover, he was a passionate teacher and cared deeply for his students. His achievements and contributions in medical and educational fields were enormous. Truly he was a good and loyal friend. I shall miss Joseph dearly.

Professor Lau Wan Yee Joseph lived a life of dedication to surgery and education. He was a personal friend and a member of the Court of Examiners of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS). He was very supportive of the RACS education and training and examinations in Hong Kong and was made an Honorary Fellow of the RACS. My condolences to the family. Rest in Peace Joseph. Joseph welcomed me to Hong Kong and taught me so much about the art and craft of surgery and a good deal about life in general. It was a pleasure to work with him at such an exciting time in both our careers and I know he'll be missed. My sincerest condolences to all his family and friends in Hong Kong and across the world.

As a close cooperative surgical colleague in the early era of the development of adult liver transplantation in Hong Kong, I witnessed the wisdom, perseverance and firm belief in human life value and ultimate success after meticulous work and attempt. He was also a great scholar, admirable mentor and eager teacher both in humanities and surgery. His final achievement as the chairman of the Medical Council signifies his commitment tothe medical fraternity and public accountability.

To our beloved Prof Joseph Lau It came with such an unbelievable shock to hear the passing away of Joseph on Feb 7 after seeing him in a meeting in CUHK(SZ) just 3 weeks earlier. Joseph is such a legendary figure to many of us as I can recall vividly in the very early days of Princess Margaret Hospital when he joined the newly formed Surgical B Unit and I was serving as the only young intern in the similarly newly formed Orthopaedic B Combined Plastic and Reconstructive Unit. It came with such an unbelievable shock to hear the passing away of Joseph on Feb 7 after seeing him in a meeting in CUHK(SZ) just 3 weeks earlier. Joseph is such a legendary figure to many of us as I can recall vividly in the very early days of Princess Margaret Hospital when he joined the newly formed Surgical B Unit and I was serving as the only young intern in the similarly newly formed Orthopaedic B Combined Plastic and Reconstructive Unit. He was already well known for his most dedicated professional care for his patients, meticulous surgery and great mentorship to all juniors. I later had the privilege of continuing my elective surgical training in GSU of QMH for a whole year of 1979 when he was Senior Medical officer and went through the intensive compact eight to nine sleepless emergency call monthly under his direct and indirect supervision. He was highly respected for his admirable surgery for the hepatobiliary problem especially for the highly challenging Recurrent Pyogenic Cholangitis emergencies well before the days of minimally invasive surgery. Joseph was a tough, tireless, ‘no-nonsense’ type of mentor with excellent surgical skill enriched with profound professional ethics. After he moved to PWH in 1989, Joseph has expanded greatly further his clinical service, research, teaching and training engagement relentlessly.

Professor Joseph Lau was my classmate in medical school. He devoted his entire life whole-heartedly and single-mindedly to medicine and his chosen specialty. He had helped my patients with hepato-pancreato-biliary problems with his vast expertise and knowledge on many occasions. He was not only extremely kind and empathetic to his patients, but also notably easy going and approachable to his colleagues. He will be greatly missed as a scholarly colleague, a valuable friend, and a dear classmate.

It is with a deep sense of grief that I write this obituary for Professor Joseph Lau whom I have known since 2001, when he visited Mumbai for a live operative workshop on Liver Surgery. He then invited me in 2002, to join as Visiting Scholar his prestigious Department at the Prince of Wale Hospital in Hong Kong to learn the nuances of Liver Surgery. What impressed me most was his helpful demeanor, passion for teaching and academics and his personal interest in the progress of his Visiting Fellows. An association which started in 2001 only blossomed into a bond of friendship and mentorship over two decades.He was truly my friend, philosopher and guide and it
was a pleasure travelling with him to attend many IHPBA, A-PHPBA, CCIHPBA, IHPBA India meetings and many a international chapter meetings.He would make it a
point to spend one morning with me over breakfast (even if it meant asking Mrs. Lau to join later!) and ask me about my progress, my family and advice me on my future
career options.

The world has lost a doyen of Liver Surgery, I have lost a great mentor, his family and his extended Hong Kong family a humane figure.I pray his soul rests in peace and
may God Almighty bestow courage and fortitude on his near and dear ones to bear with this irreplaceable loss.

The Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (A-PHPBA) is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Joseph Lau. May his soul rest in eternal peace and may his family be given the strength to bear such a colossal loss. Master Lau truly loved his students and we love him too

Master Joseph Lau is one of the best education leaders we love and respect the most. He is a visionary, a creative thinker with extraordinary breadth of mind, wealth of medical knowledge and skills. What is admirable about Master Lau is his special affinity with people and accessibility in his ways of communication. He was easy-going and had no airs at all. He was such a good listener. He often took the time and offered breakfast meetings with students and us. Whether meeting him on the road or over the boardroom table, we felt free to speak our mind and shared our ideas with him . He could hold serious discussions with us or chatted happily about little things in life. Never indulged in empty talks, but always a practical, down-to-earth problem-solver, he often shared his unconventional thinking and free imagination and yet formulated clear achievable goals with reality checks. If he found any idea potentially beneficial to the students, he would encourage us to go ahead and experiment with it. He was a great leader who truly loved his students and we love him too.

Head of a green college with a generative legacy of love

Before the inception of Lee Woo Sing College, Master Lau had already built in the principle of “Humans, Mountains, and Harmony”, that is, peaceful, harmonious relationships among mankind and between human and nature as part and parcel of our green education. It was manifested by both hardware such as the award-winning architecture of the College buildings, and software such as caring policies for students and the environment. Of all the colleges at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Lee Woo Sing College was the first one to install individual smart meters in each room of the student dormitories, and state-of-the-art solar panels on the rooftops. They are part of the green design in hardware as best practices of saving energy and lowering carbon emissions. On the software side, examples of green policies and activities abound. The College has adopted the Green Ambassadors Scheme and is the first college at CUHK to encourage students to take the lead in guiding users of canteens to return eating utensils by themselves, and to separate and recycle food waste. The university community have gradually learned to say no to one-off, single-use plastic utensils. We are happy to witness how LWS students took part in various green activities and then changed their consumption behaviours, thanks to these careful designs of hardware and software under the leadership of Master Lau.

I am grateful to Master Lau for letting me and Boman be part of the College green education team so as to make contributions to mitigate impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. We consider it our good fortune to have a great leader like Master Lau who could pool all kinds of talents to work with him. Together we aim to nurture young people who care about our environment and serve our society. As a renowned biologist Janine Benyus said, “Life always creates conditions conductive to life.” Master Lau has led the College to create the best possible conditions for our students to study and to learn to serve. Such is his labour of love, a light and a beacon of hope for generations to come.

Nurturing people and giving nature a home for future generations

On 9th November 2023, Lee Woo Sing College successfully launched her 11th Graduation Ceremony for more than 300 graduates at CUHK. We highly appreciate the wise leadership and caring culture of Lee Woo Sing College. The College has nurtured young minds with wisdom, love, integrity and harmony. Master Lau was then already 75 and recovering from a serious health challenge. Yet, he insisted on attending and delivering a speech at the Ceremony. He said that since its inception in 2008, the College had produced more than 2,600 graduates with a view to serving the community with wisdom, love, integrity and harmony. In 2023, once again, he personally presented certificates to the graduates one by one, despite his illness and exhaustion. The whole process took about two hours. We were deeply touched by his loving sacrifice and determination to spare nothing but to give his best to the students. Master Lau knew what it meant to them.

Within a short span of a year, we have lost both the founder Dr. Lee Woo Sing (a.k.a Uncle Lee) and founding Master of the College, Prof. Joseph Lau. It was like a double blow of losing two members of the family in the same period of time. It was sad and we did not know what to do. Then we remember the parable of a grain of wheat, “unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” (John 12:24). Uncle Lee and Master Lau have left us. But in the past 16 years, they had worked together and led the College to scale new heights with wisdom, love, integrity and harmony. They have transformed more than 3,000 young people into loving and caring citizens and contributing members of society. Like Uncle Lee, Master Lau has fulfilled his calling and his goals. We are proud of them, and are truly grateful. Master Lau has led such a brilliant, fulfilled and abundant life that his family must be proud of him and be comforted by the sacrifice and huge contributions he had made. He is free now, free from any pain or sickness in this world. God be willing, when we meet Master Lau again, we shall smile with each other and have a great conversation about a life of abundance.

I always look up to Prof. Lau with admiration and great respect. He was a giant surgeon, learned teacher, dedicated clinician-leader, and wise administrator. Notwithstanding his high esteem and achievements, he was approachable and kind to people around. Saw him dining at Lee Woo Sing College canteen interacting with students. Received his personal message on referral of a clinician for treatment. Got his wise counsel in committees tackling tricky issues. Dear Prof. Lau, you are deeply missed, and you're still in our hearts. May you rest in peace. Corinna
